Looking at the shoulder strap attachment points, after a few hundred miles salt from sweat would corrode this possibly. IMO if you can't afford one of many packs tried & tested do you have 3 to 5K$ it takes to do a thru? Seems like every year many hikers start in GA without enough money thinking that they can work for stay or live out of hiker boxes and somehow get to MA. Although Grandma Gatewood hiked with very minimal gear a lot has changed since then. You need to read some of the many books penned by successful thru hikers and see what and how they did it. I have met many hikers who were thru hikers one day and several days later we through hiking......
Those grommits are probably stainless but you are probably no stranger to corrosion judging by the Honda gas tank in the background! OK, seriously, there is nothing wrong with making your own gear--but wouldn't you rather benefit from others' mistakes and buy something with better odds of surviving the trail abuse? If you are set on having a 'pack' like this google 'alaskan pack'. There is a commonly used method of tying a tarp, wraped around your kit, with rope to make a pack with shoulder straps that might give you some ideas for tweeking your design. Have fun!

Yes, the grommets are stainless and the lashing is sea to summit brand, heavy duty lashing. I could always take a second pair of lashings as back up. For sweat, I am a profusely heavy sweater so yes, I would be concerned about that and I didn't think about it. Thanks. I will probably figure something out so they are not exposed.
The alaskan style wrap up, sounds pretty awesome...

Is that a marmot sleeping bag stuff sack? I've been eyeing the bag of dogfood in my kitchen and wondering if it is strong enough to make a day pack out of..
I think it's great. I would love to know more, especially about the hipbelt. What kind of belt is it? How is it attached?

Since everyone seems concerned with the metal grommets, why not look into getting some Nylon grommets. They are actually quite strong, and no metal to corrode, also the edges aren't as sharp so they won't wear through your tie strap.
If there is no sewing, how is it held together? - as others asked, more details please on the construction.
Taped? Either way looks good.
