It's seems like the only thing I need is Sgt Rock's guidebook and the Trails Illustrated Maps. Any thoughts? Should I carry the data book and BMTA pamphlet/guidebook?

I wouldn't, the maps and my guide should be all you need. But that is me, I don't like having too many books to work from.

SR, off the top of your head do you know which on-trail or close-to-trail resupply stops are closed in January?
And if the hostel by the river is open still?
I don't know if the hostel is open, I would assume it is since the owners of the restaurant have it and they are open then. Other services closed:
Webb Brothers
Hiwasee Outfitter
Green Cove Motel
Deals Gap Motorcycle lodge
Fontanna Village is on limited hours/days
Smokemont Campground
There may be more, but that is all I can think of right now.

I ordered all the books and maps that the BMT Association offered when we did our hike. We used each one of them numerous times. The trail is NOT clearly marked and we were so glad we had the data books and trail maps. I have never looked at any of the other resources that are available.

smokemont campground is open year round........
The BMTA map has an error. Not major but Mt. Guyot is in the wrong place.
