The Appalachian mountains and the Appalachian Trail are two distinctly different entities.

The Appalachians extend from the coast of Canada down to Alabama [1]

The Appalachian National Scenic Trail extends from Katahdin to Springer Mountain.

Unless congress changes the termini, that is the way it will be.

Let’s keep the other trails in the Appalachians a distinct and separate identity with their own character.

[1] Yeah..I know technically they go under the ocean and extend into north Africa. The Moroccans would be amused to find their mountains called the Appalachians. Just as we would be amused to find the Appalachians called the Atlas Mountains. Have to draw the line somewhere.

Sorry, unless you were referring to a more general "the people" not specifically in this thread...

This all seems like a waste of time. Doesn't the trail to the south of the A.T. already exist? If so then we're not really talking about expanding the trail, just renaming a section of another trail. I can't think of any real benefit from doing this.

I hereby demand that In the event that the terminus is extended, all previous recipients of 2000 Miler award must surrender their patches to the ATC until they go back and hike the new section of trail.

I always thought that MT. Oglethorpe would make a nice southern terminus for the trail.

I enjoy the Pinhoti for what it is. I like being able to go out for days and see no one. I would hate to see this change by dissolving it into the AT.

Sorry, my bad. If it's any consolation, I only did so because it allowed me to make a sarcastic comment.

Hehe, its funny to think that a trail would never change. Trails move, they get rerouted, lengthened, shortened, abandoned, etc. As long as the Appalachian Trail follows the Appalachians, what is the big deal? It seems like a few people here have a vested interest in fighting change. I recognize 2 members who posted here having hostels in Georgia that I guess, think that they would somehow lose business if the trail went into Alabama. I guess they don't understand that the trail, as currently purposed, would still go up Springer. Change is not something to always be feared.
