Unless you want to keep hiking the same part near you over, and over, and over, eventually, you may need to travel at least 1000 miles in each direction to hike toward each end. Even if you live 100 ft from it.

    It's OK
Will be car camping in July at Lake Michigan Rec Area (NF Campground) for a long weekend. It's right on the boarder of the Nordhouse Dunes Wilderness with miles of empty Lake Michigan Beaches. No possibility for long hikes, but the walks are amazing.

Myself, and my friend Deer Hunter (he's near Glascow/Buena Vista VA--- Whiteblaze member) can help hikers out since we live so close to the trail.

I hear ya on the gas prices. It's not $4 a gallon in VA but it's still high enough.
I help out when I can.

About sixty miles to I77 at the Bland exit. A few more to your neck of the trail HM but not by much.

Best as I can calculate--the closest point is roughly 685 miles from my home (give or take 5 miles).

About 4 miles as the crow flies to top of Mt Madison in NH, about 6 miles to the intersection of the Centennial trail and the Mahoosuc Trail.

    12 time zones away.
Why do you think I usually post when most of you are sleeping.
    Don't know how many miles but it's about a 22 hour flight(s).
Sometimes I go by way of Europe, sometimes by way of CA.
This year I'll be stopping at Tahoe and do some hiking on the Tahoe Rim trail on my way back.

11 miles to the AT and I would guess 20-25 minutes to about two trailheads

Yeah, I'm from Sch. Haven but have a family here in Phuket, Thailand.
It's an island in the south of Thailand.

Been working on designing a 100 mile hiking trail here for 8 years now.
I hope to finish it this year.
Been out on it a lot lately.
I guess you could say I miss hiking.

Gonna climb the highest peak in SE Asia in 2 weeks. Mt. Kinabalu in Borneo
The AT was my introduction to adventure.

I do still get out on the AT almost every year.
I get back there for my company's selling season every fall.
    Usually make the gathering.

This is a job for Google Earth. Using the ruler function, it is 8646 mile from the clock tower in the center of Phuket city to the closest point on the AT (Katahdin summit).

So that got me thinking. Who lives the furthest from the AT? I found that this this house in Windy Harbour, Western Australia is 11,627 from the closest point of the AT (which is also Katahdin).
