Default Where are the thru hikers middle of June?

I am planning hiking from NY/CT border to Katahdin starting around June 15th. To those who have thru hiked, where were you around the middle of June? Thanks!

I was in Shenandoah at that time (started April 3). NOBO thru-hikers could literally be anywhere from Damascus, Va. to the Whites at that point. You'll be able to make thru-hiker friends, but they might be hard to keep up with if they're the ones who are that far north that soon. Either they hike pretty fast or they're pretty skilled with the thumb.

I was in Pennsylvania in June on both thruhikes. I started April 1 though, so you will probably meet some of the Feb./ March starters in mid-June in NY.

This is a table that shows the progress of the "middle-of-the-pack" completing NOBOs:

TABLE 3 -- Date Landmarks Were Reached

MEDIAN DAY ~~ MEAN DAY ~~~ LANDMARK
    March 17............March 20...........Springer
    March 25............March 28...........Georgia Border
    April 1................April 5...............Fontana
    April 28..............April 29..............Damascus
    May 29..............May 28..............Waynesboro
    June 9...............June 8...............Harpers Ferry
    June 29.............June 27..............DWG
    July 12..............July 10...............Kent
    Aug. 5...............Aug. 2...............Glencliff
    Aug. 15.............Aug. 12..............Gorham
    Aug. 26.............Aug. 22..............Stratton
    Sept. 9..............Sept. 4..............Katahdin!

That middle of the pack will get to where you are starting three or four weeks after you start, but as SCRUB HIKER points out they are spread out enough that you will definitely see some NOBOs in the middle of June if you are starting at the NY/CT border.

On June 15 I was in southern PA. I hiked from Ensign Cowall Shelter to Tumbling Run Shelter that day.

In 2009 I started in late Feb. and on Jun. 15th I woke up in a hotel room in Kent, CT, which turned out to be one of the few dry nights I had from NY to VT.

2009 was a great year to thru-hike. Never had any problems finding water!
