How can my family follow my journals while I'm gone?
Can my friends and family subscribe to my journals? Or do they have to become members first?

Here on whiteblaze your journal can be viewed without being a member but in order to subscribe to your journal one has to be a member.

As someone stated. If you put your journal on WhiteBlaze anyone can follow it without being a member of WhiteBlaze. However if you want family members and friends to receive email notifications each time you add a journal they will have to become a member of WhiteBlaze and subscribe to your journal.
