There have been quite a few outstanding writers, professional or not, who've hiked the AT. In fact, John Henzell (aka Rolling Thunder) is hiking the trail this year. He's a "real" writer, a paid journalist from New Zealand, and he often covers many of those newsworthy stories from the middle east.
