So as a disclaimer this is coming from a never-married 22 year old, but there are so many ways to keep in touch on the AT, you'd still be able to communicate at minimum once a week if not more often. As long as you're not leaving everyone high and dry financially would it really be that bad? I can't see myself marrying anyone who'd have a problem with that.
There's no reward at the end for the most miserable thru-hiker.
After gear you can do a thru for $2,000.
No training is a substitute for just going and hiking the AT. You'll get in shape.

Too many posts to read to know if this has been addressed or not..... If you don't have spouses buy-in on this adventure, you probably have less of a chance of success. Tough as it is anyway, if you have feelings of guilt etc., well......

Who is being selfish, the hiker or the stay at home? Hardest part for me is not having the daily connection with my Wife. We both should have a spot. Would may the trip more worry free for both of us.

the answer lies with you and your wife. Other's I've met have similar issues with their partners. Some partners have no issue with long distance hiking separations, actually welcome the time away. I'm usually fine with 3-4 weeks separation, but its usually me that wants to get back home after that time away.

I say why should a person be penalized because their significant other or wife in this case doesn't want to or can't go!! You have one short life to squeeze everything in!! It is definitely not selfish. They can be involved in other ways such as support and encouragement if they feel left out!!

Nothing wrong with hiking that day, as long as the schedule allows

(Hey, the title does ask about a THUR hike - so that would be Thursday, right?
