Looking at a section hike when I get back to the states in Aug-Sep. But the ultimate goal is to be able to follow in Top Rocks footsteps anr thru when I retire in 2014.

Retired since 1978, but still maintain contact with my former EOD buddies. I received this in an EOD fraternal newsletter today and it made me grin with the memories, but it does reflect today's kids in the military - somewhat.

LETTER FROM A FARM KID IN TRAINING

Dear Ma and Pa. I am well. Hope you are. Tell Brother Walt and Brother Elmer the Marine Corps beats working for Old Man Minch by a mile. Tell them to join up quick, before all of the places are filled. I was restless at first, because you got to stay in bed 'til nearly 6 AM. But I am getting so I like to sleep late. Tell Walt and Elmer all you do before breakfast is smooth your cot, and shine some things. No hogs to slop, feed to pitch, mash to mix, wood to split, fire to lay. Practically nothing. Men got to shave, but it is not so bad. There's warm water. Breakfast is strong on trimmings like fruit juice, cereal, eggs, bacon, etc., but kind of weak on chops, potatoes, ham, steak, fried eggplant, pie and other regular food. But tell Walt and Elmer you can always sit by the two city boys that live on coffee. It's no wonder these city boys can't walk much. We go on "route marches", which the Platoon Sergeant says are long walks to harden us. If he thinks so, it's not my place to tell him different. A "route march" is about as far as to our mailbox at home. Then the city guys get sore feet and we all ride back in trucks. This will kill Walt and Elmer with laughing. I keep getting medals for shooting. I don't know why. The bull’s-eye is near as big as a chipmunk head and don't move, and it ain't shooting back at you like the Higgett boys at home. All you got to do is lie - there all comfortable and hit it. You don't even load your own cartridges. They come in boxes. Then we have what they call hand-to-hand combat. You get to wrestle with them city boys. I do have to be real careful though. They break real easy. It ain’t like fighting with that ol’ bull at home. I’m about the best they got in this, except for that Tug Jordan from over in Silver Lake. I only beat him once. He joined up the same time as me, but I'm only 5'6" and 130 pounds, and he's 6'8" and near 300 pounds dry. Be sure to tell Walt and Elmer to hurry and join before other fellers get onto this setup and come stampeding in. Your loving daughter, Carol.

I never enlisted but grew up on military bases all over.My Pa is Steven Meyer from Neligh Ne and was Army from 1970 to 1990. He was in Nam,and recieved 4 Purple Hearts and the Bronze Star. Later S Korea, where he met and married my mom.A year later I was born @ Walter Reed while they were stationed at Ft Meade, then off to Ft Campbell Ky.Was a recruiter in 1980 in MN, was sent to Germany for Reforger and shortly after we were moved to tx and retired the year they started to dismantle Ft Hood, he was part of the 2nd Armored Division. Years back we had a falling out and it wasn't till I went backpacking did he start talking to me, mostly about gear and how to take care of my feet and he even sent me a couple can openers. I would love the opportunity to go hiking with him, but I don't know if the hiking community would ever be ready for us! And unfortunately he is dying from cancer.

I am a US Air Force Kid (enlisted brat). My father joined the airforce in 1968, was stationed at Griffiss AFB in NY....where I was born in 1970. Then he got stationed in Goose Bay Labrador, Newfoundland where my sister was born in 1972. Then we moved back to Griffiss in 1974. Then dad only went to Thailand, Korea, and Vietnam. He came back with an airmens medal of honor for heroism (which he doesn't talk about). We were at Griffiss from 1974 to 1981 when we moved to Ramstein AFB in West Germany. We left Germany in 1985 to come back to Griffiss where dad retired with 26 years of service in 1994. Only hazard of growing up on an airbase your entire life is when they lockdown the base for the gulf war....you are so screwed if you have to take college midterms offbase. The best parts of growing up in the military are: you can write an entire paper using abbreviations that makes total sense, AMMO shouted in a bar is a fighting word at some places, you get to see land and countryside most kids only dream about, and you get to tell those that whine about being in the military...I was born into it, y'all volunteered, so quit the whining.
