Lightbulb People Who Have Hiked The AT In The Pensacola Area

People Who Have Hiked The AT In The Pensacola Area, I would like to talk with you about the trail. I wish to do the trail in the summer of 2013, at the age of 16. My parents would like more information about the trail so they can make a decision on whether to let me go or not. I am almost an Eagle Scout with the BSA and really want to do the trail. Please contact me at (850)-450-2560 or [email protected]

I have never hiked the AT in the Pensacola area but I look forward to that extension of the trail - does it connect to the Pinhoti? Probably brutal in the summer, will plan to start in Feb-March

You want to speak to Cimarron. He is a local Pensacola man who has thru hiked the AT. Last year, he attempted to be the oldest thru hiker at the age of 88/89. He is also a "retired" scout volunteer, having lead over a dozen scout treks to Philmont.

Have you or your parents contact me via personal message (I am also a local scout leader), and I will pass on Cimarron's contact information to you.

I personally would suggest for a 16 yr old go hundreds of miles away in the woods for an extended time by themselves. However if they were part of a small group that had at least one 18+ yr old that was mature and responsible, I would consider it.

In general, very young hikers have more issues with living on their own than they do with the actual hiking. Some useful things you can do to prepare are to make your own meals, do your own laundry, bidget and shop with the money you need to live on. I'm not being insulting here, just stating that normal American teenagers aren't expected/permitted to do any of those things, which makes going off on their own a shock. While a sixteen-year-old is fully capable of doing all of the above and much, much more, the skills need to be learned, and you have to have the opportunity to learn them.

When I hiked in '06, there was a 17-year-old thru hiker, Bonefish. He started the trail with his older sister. After a month, she got off the trail to get a job. Bonefish continued on his own. I believe he turned 18 a week or two before he reached Springer. He was from Florida. Unfortunately I don't have his current contact information.

Pinky and The Brain thru hiked right after they graduated from high school. They did a month-long section hike that summer, then spent the rest of the year working and saving money for the actual thru hike. I met them during their initial section hike.

Share Kirby's Trail Journal with your parents. He turned 17 a few weeks into his thru hike.

Are you talking about Penscola, FL. That is the north terminus of the Florida Trail which then leads to the Pinhoti Trail which runs through Alabama, which in fact is part of the "The Great Eastern Trail" which starts in Key West, Florida and runs to Canada and intersects with the AT. Try looking at this link it may clear up some of the distances and connections.

That is actually incorrect - Its called The Eastern Continental Trail - The one you are refering to runs parallel to the AT while the AT is part of the ETC
