Default Erwin TN area hike end of august or early sept.

Looking for a hiking partner going to hike either from erwin to us19 or kincora to 19. I'm flexible as this will be my first long hike at any elevation , I'm late 20s male in pretty good shape. May take me time to get used to it so I don't need someone in a huge rush. It's about 45 miles or so, if I'm having a good time I'm flexible to hiking the 70 or so miles. Let me know. Thanks

19E to Erwin would be a better direction IMO. It's dang near uphill all the way from Erwin to Roan Mt.

I didnt think N from Erwin was bad at all. By the time you reach Roan after a day or two you have gotten trail legs and a lighter pack and breeze up it. Hitting Roan S from 19E with a full pack would be a bit more difficult first day in my book.

Actually, I recall my son saying on the way down to 19E, "Im sure glad we didnt have come up this way!"

Definitely more elevation gain going NOBO..

You've got the climb out of Erwin which basically goes on for 14 miles till you get over Unaka Mt. Then there is the long, long, long, long hike up Roan Mt. starting at Hughes Gap. Once you get over Roan Mt it's not too bad and the last 5 miles to 19E are pretty much downhill.

I'd much rather have that 5 mile climb from 19E up to the balds and then drop down Roan Mt. back to Erwin the last 34 or so miles.

Either way it's an awesome hike. The trail from over the balds is great.

Just going to say either way is great. Definitely some good hiking.
I'm not really a hiker, I just play one on White Blaze.

i agree, great hike. Little rock knob is unexpectedly fun too near the top.
