No need for bear canister. I am afraid that readily available human food on AT may lead to a bear canister rule though. I use the setup I have to protect the food from the pack, not the critters. Plus, given my OCD, I want my pack packed the same exact way regardless of amount of food in pack. These canisters take up the same volumes full or empty and weigh about 6 oz.

The last 5 or so miles into Neels Gap REQUIRE a canister if overnighting.
I'm afraid I can predict this is the thin edge of the wedge on the AT.
Why?
Because the bean counters will see a reduction in bear "incidents" in this 5 miles (because no one camps there) and extend the range.

When I got Blaze she was already 8 months and had been tortured by rotts. She used to jump the 6 foot fence and go visit the neighbors.

To make a short story longer, she was picked up and sent to doggie juvi. She had to be fixed before they would let us get her back.
