Is Sugarloaf Mtn ME, summit house open to hikers?

It was a few years ago. Is there an update?

Wasn't last year.

I don't know if it is now locked or not, but, back on my thru-hike in '95, I had a great experience there.
There was a note down on the trail telling me and another hiker to make sure we didn't miss the summit and building there.
We went up and there were our two girlfriends with 4 lobsters, 2 bottles of wine and candles.
Awesome night.

They closed it because hikers kept trashing it.

Got another great story from that place:
After my first time thru there, I ended up moving to the area and working construction out of Stratton.
We had a good rock band that winter and our drummer worked for Sugarloaf.

A few years later, I was hiking and slept up there. There was a phone there that was hooked into the Sugarloaf network.
I asked the operator if she could ring our drummer's office and although it was after hours, she did and I left a message. in the morning, he called me up.
We ended up getting together. 20 years later, I still keep in touch with him.

Too bad they shut it down. Good memories for sure of that place.
