    Default Stabbing in GSMNP

Surprised it hasn't been on here yet.
    http://www.wate.com/story/18757375/h...ictim-recovers

It happened as I was hitching back from Cades Cove Friday, and I arrived at Sugarlands as they were about to airlift the woman out. The Visitor Center wasin lockdown mode for 30 minutes too. as the bus took me into town there were rangers on the trail with assault rifles, kinda spooky.

Not sure if it was related but G'burg police detectives were interviewing Gran Prix Motel employees within an hour after I arrived.

    Be careful out there folks.

Why can't people just do this in the big cities like where I live, we expect this kind of insanity.

Very tragic! Women are more vulnerable on the trail than one might think. Good to know that the Rangers got involved in trying to track down this guy.

...and some on WB jest at me for always hiking with a pistol, with serious stopping power, may I add. They would have had his body to retrieve if he had been me.

Bad guys don't give you warning. All you would have done is give a bad guy a pistol with serious stopping power. GEEZ! Please don't use this sad event to hi-jack the thread for another irrational gun-lover rant.

I'm glad to hear this woman is out of the hospital already. Best to her and her family.

I'm not a fanatic about guns, in either direction. It's entirely possible the victim here, if armed and well trained, could have put this episode to a stop quickly. At the same time, the perp might have overpowered her, even if she were well-trained both in gun use and in self-defense.

All that being said, I think it is wise for any of us to have a degree of training in self-defense or martial arts. Adds to fitness at a minimum, helps to fend off potential harm from others in the rare and unfortunate instances.

I can't figure how you can't figure. Assuming the woman wasn't literally hiking with the gun in her hand and the perp wasn't wearing a Tshirt saying "I'm a rapist/murderer", I can think of any number scenarios. Those type of people don't give warnings...in fact probably just the opposite. And since I've never seen a person on the trail with a handgun in sight, I'll assume the gun was concealed and would take some time to draw.

I could easily imagine two people meeting on the trail (male/female) ...pleasantly chatting each other up as happens many times a day...bigger ,stronger male suddenly and violently punches female knocking her out or draws a weapon of choice etc....in other words ....game over. The concealed weapon female was carrying now belongs to the attacker and she is at his complete mercy.

That's how I figure. In fact there are many cases of trained police being disarmed by criminals.

I'm sorry, but thats just a dumb azz thing to say.

Thats a popular, multi use trail used by many. Not just "hikers".

I am going to advise folks not to let this degenerate into the usual pointless gun thread. It really could go either way were she armed, it's very hypothetical. Thanks.
