Jetboil Flash - is this normal?

Hi folks.



I just bought this Jetboil Flash. As you can see from the pic above, there are dents in the bottom of the cooking cup. There are six of them in total; three sets of two. I assumed they were caused by someone at Jetboil pressing down too hard while packing the contents, as the dents perfectly line up with the corners of the stabilizer.

I emailed Jetboil about it and they claimed that the dents are "spot welding points" and that it is perfectly normal. I'm only slightly dubious.

So I ask: does your Jetboil have dents like these?

I have an old Jetboil, from 2005.

I really can't tell what's in the pic, can you upload another viewpoint? Are the six dents separated equally? I'm having a hard time visualizing someone pressing down too hard enough to cause dents, but better pics would help. I'll look at my stove see if I can see what you're talking about.

I have similar markings (five of them) on the inside of the cup with associated points on the outside; it's all for combining the cup to the stove adapter (part with fins). Here's some pics

And this is the outside. It's hard to see, but you can see some discolorization at the 12 o'clock postion and I can feel an slight indentation and it corresponds with the crimped mark in the cup.

BTW, I put my stabilizer in the top of my stove (fits inside it) and my pot support on top the fuel bottle which goes in the bottom of my cup. This is how I put the stuff in the cup.

This is not a quality control problem, those dents lock the cup to the stove.

That solves my problem. Thanks a lot, John, and thanks also for sharing your packing setup. That helped immensely, as it allowed enough extra room for my coffee press.

I would almost consider this poor workmanship, as the dents (at least in newer models) cause the surface coating on the inside of the cup to crack and chip off. It seems like they could have done the spot welding prior to applying that coating. Heavy use might cause it to chip even more. I like it regardless.

Hmmmm, sure sounds like a quality control issue to me too. Chipping and cracking......
