Isn't a cottage a summer home for a rich person?

I manufacture rugged alcohol stoves ($7 to $8). I didn't design them, but they aren't patented.

There are two threads going on this topic and this one with the Sticky did not have the most recent updates. So I copied the most recent update from the other thread to here to make this info easier for people to find. I also fixed a few links. All links work as of Sep 22, 2012.
    I love this list! Thanks

I have several things off of this list, and I think it's one of the best comprehensive lists on the internet. In fact this guy has a very informative site, directed towards hikers of all varieties, and varying skillsets.
I have a cuben fiber Lightheart Solo, with an awning, that I scrimped and saved for . I like the way it sets up, as well as the fact that it can be repaired with duct tape in the field. I chose to get the awning after owning a Henry Shire's Double Rainbow, and enjoying what he has done with his tents. I also have from that list, a custom made backpack from Elemental Horizons, with the owner and I working closely together to create a backpack I can work with easily, that will help protect a shoulder injury and subsequent plating of said injury, as well as some other issues I have had with earlier packs. After some dayhikes and some airline trips with said pack, I can say that it is one tough hombre, even though it is quite light. I got his new, smaller pack at 42 liters. His prices are in line for what most cottage industries charge, and he didn't charge me a fortune to help create what will be my companion for several months on the trail.
Just my 2 cents for a couple of cottage industry makers on that list. I actually prefer the cottage industry makers in most cases, as they pay more attention to quality control, and getting a custom piece done isn't an impossiblity. My own experiences with them have all been positive, and I endorse using them whenever possible.

Could be an opportunity opening up with twinkies and such. Maybe use stuff left in hiker boxes as the main ingredients. "May contain ramen and/or oatmeal and/or grits and/or gorp and/or shelter mouse droppings. Hiker funk#5 added for flavour, colour, smell, and as a preservative agent."

No shelters at the moment. "Late 2014 or early 2015" before shelters will be back in production.

"Cottage" is a bit of a loose term given that , for example, our Tarptents are made in a factory in Seattle , not inside Henry's house and that other, commonly referred to as "cottage" ,have sold goods made in China. However John West at Borah in a May 2014 interview defined his 4 employee business as "Microcottage" and yes he does make his own stuff.
    http://hikeitlikeit.com/2014/borah-gear-with-john-west/

Don't know about Luke but having seen his products over the last few years they don't look as mass produced stuff re-badged.
Can't see the photos comparing colours and sizes but often' particularly with fabrics with a glossy finish , the photos will not look the same as the real product.
(mind you, there is also a slight or not so slight colour change from batch to batch...)
A correctly colour balanced pro shot will minimise that but not many manufacturers hire pro photographers for their product shots.
(Incidentally that is how I started a relationship with Henry Shires at TT, because the colour balance in many of his web shots was way out).

Agree that "cottage gear manufacturer" is a loosely used term. In my case, even after 4 years in "business", I am the only one involved, I have no employees, and my basement is both my "production facility" and "warehouse". Customer service is me <-> you. Very few items are obtained and resold, the vast majority I make myself. Maybe I'm a "hobbyist gear maker". If this term catches on, remember you saw it here first.
