Default List of my gear...Please help me minimize it...

Here is my list of items that I plan on bringing with me on the AT this year. I have included everything down to the nighty-gritty of things. Including a few items that I still believe I need to purchase. I have not included food or water into any of my totals so far and my entire weight including all list below is 38lbs & 3ozs. If there is anyone out there that will be willing to help me cut some of the weight I have down I would be most gratious. Because I don't have that much money to spend alot of my items are a little heavier then I would like. Also on my clothes I can reduce an additonal .5oz due to cutting and removing all tags though that I only have a food scale it is difficult for me to have an accurate weight down to grams so my over all weight is probably 37lbs. Anyways thank you very much and I am looking forward to anyones critique on the following thank you....

lots pretty comprehensive.. all those little things add weight i guess!

I would cut down on some of your clothes, you probably dont need a fleece, long sleeve tee and a insulated jacket- just take the lightest and go. In the cold i wear long johns, a down sweater and my rainjacket and have been quite hot in cold weather. Also, you really only need 2 pr of good poly underwear

Lastly, think hard about what you really need in the first aid kit- this has to do with how prone you are to cramps in the tummy muscles etc and how much you stink. I only take a bottle of hand sani (multiuse) half a tube of triple antibiotic, toothpaste and Dr. B's. This covers me for any little accidents and personal hygiene. If i ever get more sick i know that gas stations will sell me a little pepto or whatever. I don't use deoderant: it attracts animals and if you don't use it for a while, your body will adjust and stink less.

    good luck with the planning!

Read above red and blue comments. You have a lot of redunant items and extras, and some choices that likely won't work, like sterno. Clean up the list, recalculate. and then repost, but leave seperate what you will wear while hiking in warm dry weather, such as boots, one pair socks, shorts, tee shirt, cap, bandana, etc.

    4EB's post is spot-on.

It sounds to me like you need to do a shake-down hike for a few days - all the stuff you are bringing that you think you can't do without will drag you down - you just don't need all this STUFF.

Just for fun, compare your list to my standard spring, summer, fall pack list:

Osprey Atmos 50 (liter) backpack / pack cover
35 - degree sleeping bag and stuff sack
    MSR Hubba Carbon Reflex Tent
Tyvek house wrap ground sheet cut to fit tent
    3/4 thermorest (ladies - I'm a 5'8 man)
MSR Pocket Rocket / Propane Fuel Canister
windscreen - custom made with roof flashing to use with stove
1 @ 1- liter MSR titanium cookpot, strainer lid (doubles as coffee cup)
    Aqua Mira for Water Purification
    little bag with stuff including
lighter, tiny pocketknife, headlamp, batteries, spoon,
toothbrush cut in 1/2, paste, coaches tape, tiny first aid stuff, blister pads, etc.
1 oz bottle of Dr. Brommers soap
small cell phone (turned off) and charger cord
small Change Clothes waterproof stuff sack as follows:
    silk boxers for sleeping
    long underwear
    light wool icebreaker sweater
    stocking cap
    spare silky t-shirt
    spare smart-wool socks
2 granite gear stuff sacks for above items
    big zip lock with
current map, data book page photocopies, small journal book, pencil and sharpie
Food Bag - about 7 lbs for 4-5 days.
18' - 2 mil cord for food hang (keep in food bag)
1 1/2 - 2 liters water (depending on availability) Gatorade bottles
tiny flask of liquor - 8oz - (optional)
1 garbage bag - put legs in for quick warm -up
rain jacket - arc-teryx packlight, marmot rain pants
    crocs and pack towel
very small digital camera on hip belt

about 29 pounds with food and water
    base weight - about 18.5 - 19.5

Papa D -- I like your list, but can't figure out what the "W.L." is that you use with your windscreen. With a tiny flask of liquor in your pack is it necessary to also bring "white lightening"? And, I'm surprised to learn that MSR now sells titanium "cockpits". Hikers need to understand that here in Kentucky (and along most if not all of the AT) it is illengal to operate cock pits. Using cook pots occcasionaly is probably still permissible.

thank you for all the input I will definitly look into your suggestions while you have alot of good ones that i will be considering... Hopefully I'll be able to get my pack down to 25lbs with all your tips. again thank you...
also as far as the redunatcies of extra clothes is simply a habit i guess .... i backpacked/hitch hiked last summer from northern cali went south to san diego then across arizona, new mexico, texas, oaklahoma, arkansas, then to tennessee and my bag weighed almost 90lbs.... But then again i was simply moving lol... anyways again thanks for all the input and i'd love to see your list one of these days with weights etc....

Read all the replies in your other thread as well http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/show...lease-critique And to take all of our comments collectively - you just have too much stuff and some of it is quite heavy. Other items could be changed: the sleeping pad is heavy at 19 oz if that weight is accurate, a <$10 blue one at W-M is perhaps 11 or 12 oz. the tent is really heavy for a solo hiker. consider a tarp or tarptent at under 2 lbs. Minimize. Other than socks, you don't need more than one of anything

I haven't posted a gear list in a long while but maybe this week I will just for entertainment purposes and to get feedback and tips and keep myself honest. I'm not thru-hiking, so my list leaves off a few things that a thru hiker would want like a phone charger, a spare set of batteries, more trail guide pages, more daily type meds if needed, but my base weight without food and water rarely exceeds 18 lbs. unless out on a combination hike and fishing trip when I take a few more camping and cooking luxuries and carry perhaps as much as 25 base. Final weight depends on if I'm hammocking (new to me) or just tarping or tenting, what stove/cookgear I take, what clothing I choose, what conditions I expect (I pretty much only hike in VT , NH and ME and conditions can be "interesting" here). That's for hikes up to a week or so. But there isn't a lot of difference in gear as a thru hike is mostly a string of 3 to 6 day sections with the added logisitic of resupply/town stops.

    What is your start date?

Here is your cut list (dont bring the following or read the attached comment as to how to switch it out for a lighter option)

Insulated Jacket 16oz (Is this a rain jacket too if not cut it and replace with some down vest (6 oz)
3 Pairs Underware 3oz (Drop em and go with body glide if you chafe)
    Q-Tips 1oz
Army Closed-Cell Sleeping Pad 19oz (Heaviest closed foam I have ever even imagined, Heavy as a prolite air pad. Cut and get a 20 dollar ridgerest solite only 8 oz for a regular)
Mylar Sleeping Bag 2.5oz (What is this a liner? keep or not depending on your start date, your bag is warm so I hope your not starting to early)
Trek Poles Outdoor (Walmart) 32oz (WAY too heavy most poles are around a pound to 20 oz.)AT Companion book, Data book,
Journal/Wallet 18oz ( cut in sections if you are doing mail drops and send it to yourself along the way. Also it is necessary to have 2 guides)
SD Baseball Hat 3.5oz (Heavy mine weighs 2.5 oz)

Trowel W/Bag 4.5oz (You got hands, trekking poles, rocks, sticks, boots, make due its only a 6 in hole)
Camp Towel 3oz (No you have bandanna, but at least cut this in half and ditch half)

Toilet Paper 1oz? ( what are the wipes for then)
Hand Sanitizer 3oz (more or this is the same as above in medic kit)

Overall I feel like in an effort to be prepared you are way over-prepared. Most of this is now cut and with it most of your weight. Can you really fit all this in an oprey 65 before I cut it? If so impressive. I think you will be ok once you have taken a look back and reconsidered the use of each item. If not you can easily do this gear cut down at the neels gap outfitter, haha jk. Good luck and I hope to see you on the trail.

Wow I am exhaused just thinking about that load.
    With food and water 52#.

I guess it depends on if you want all that stuff when you stop with the burden of carrying that heavy load or
you can make do with less and have a very comfortable hike.

Seriously I would leave about half that stuff at home and shoot for a 30# total weight with food and water, IE a 16# base weight.
You are probably going to send half of it home anyway after a couple hundred miles.

This is Matthew Edwards list from his AT thru last year.
You dont have to spend a fortune either.
You can set up a Sub 5# big 4 for less than $300 if you buy some slightly used and MYOG some of it.

    http://postholer.com/journal/viewGea...a&event_id=801

He is at about 8# total.
You can find some of his posts over at BPL.

    Big 4
My 2 cents you can take with a grain of salt.
You can go UL and cheap but you need to MYOG for some of it.

Used tarptent contrail - 26 oz. You can pick one up for $100-$125.
Mariposa - 22 oz - Used $125 but I would look for one that is like new.
    MYOG sil pack cover - 2 oz - $10
    GG 1/8 pad ($10) and a Neoair small (on sale for $65) 11.5oz total - $75
    MYOG M90 Climashied quilt - sub $100 - Similar to a Spirit quilt reg size - 27dF 21 oz - $100
    Polycro/Frostking (makes 2 or 3)ground cloth 1.5 oz - $15
    Dry bag 2 oz - $15 for 5

    5.4#

Add 5oz myog bag cookset, 10 oz everyday/nav, 4 oz med, etc etc etc.
Just keep everything else under 6#-8# total and you will be good to go.

Even if you kept your existing heavy pack, use the rest of the big 4 listed above, add 8# for everything else, plus 14# of food and water you would be at 29.6# total which is a heck of a lot better than 52#.

You can go lighter still if you go tarp and a MYOG tyvek bivy. or use a Campmor extended poncho tarp - 9oz - double use as rain gear.

This is all you really need HERE (ignore the pop-up). It's tried and true. Add a trash compactor bag for a liner and 100 wt. fleece jacket if you want. Ditch stuff in summer to go even lighter.

Get rid of all that para cord- 50 ft. of 2mm nylon cord is all you need for bear bagging. Cut 10 ft. off it for a clothes drying line.

    Can opener? Really?

    Cheers.

    Bored so....
Here is your list chopped and revised. You can probably do it for about $300-400 depending and just sell your other gear. I could have missed a few things but still a lot lighter.
Below will put you at 30# with 5days food and 2L of H2o.

    Sleeping – Replace - 34oz

Cut down Ridgerest or a Small neoair on a GG 1/8 pad – 12oz

MYOG quilt or a golite ultra 20 etc - 21oz
REI Sleeping Bag Stuff Sack 1oz

Trek Poles Outdoor (Walmart) – OUT – Replace - 16oz

They are junk anyway. You can find some good poles on sale now

If you will spend most of you time in shelters,
I think its better to go with a shaped tarp and a net tent.

Way too much stuff. Believe me you can do it in 4-8 oz depending.

in a country time lemonade container.

    Just downsize everything

Better but you are still going to be at almost 40# with 5 days food and 2L of water.
Better than it was before but you can still chop off about another 5# pretty easy.

You are doing okay but you have a few very heavy items that have to go. Get rid of the heavy stuff, especially the
biggest offenders and you will lose over 7#.
That will put you at about 18# base weight and 32# with food and 2L of h20.

You need to do some used shopping over at BPL.
    http://www.backpackinglight.com/cgi-....html?forum=19

The Water-Proof Insulated Jacket at 39oz is way too heavy - lose 2#.
Look around for a Montbell down UL inner or a thermawrap parka.
The Thermawrp parka will weigh about 14 oz and the down UL inner jacket about 7oz.
I just bought a down UL inner jacket on BPL for $50.

Tent is way too heavy - lose 2#
    Your options
Eureka Spitfire - $90 on sale - 3# - replace the stakes with titanium.
Eureka Solitare - $55 - less than 3# - Replace the poles with aluminum. Its alomst a bivy tent, IE you can not sit up in it.
    Tarptent Contrail - $120 used - 24-26oz

Sleeping - All too Heavy - lose 1.75#

Gossemer gear 1/8 foam pad and used prolite 3 small - $45 and 14oz
Used Montbell #3 ultralight - $200 - 18oz - or other used UL bag or MYOG.
YOu can build a 30dF MYOG quilt for $100 or less.
You dont need the Mylar Sleeping Bag

    Backpack 67oz = 4lbs 3oz
Too heavy for me but a good pack.
A platy 2 liter non zip badder is lighter than 6oz

Books - too heavy - lose 14 oz - You will end up tossing the heavy one or send back anyway.

Stove Bag - too heavy - save maybe 1# here.
Put one of these together. Its basically free - 5 oz.
Just test it out at home and learn to bag cook.
    <a href="http://s195.photobucket.com/albums/z300/tammons3/Hiking%20gear/?action=view&amp;current=18ozcookkit.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z300/tammons3/Hiking%20gear/18ozcookkit.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

If you can afford it buy a ursak minor and odor proof bags. The Ursak minor and one odor proof bag weighs 4oz and you just tie it to a tree.
IE no hanging, throwing rocks etc.

Bathroom/Hygenie - Can go lighter - lose maybe 4 oz
    Just research over at BPL

    Misc - suggestions

    2 S-Biners 1oz
Knife - Get a kershaw chill and stick it in your pocket - $18 on Amazon - 2oz
    Flashlight - get a headlamp

You Walmart trekking poles will not last. Trust me - lose 4.5 oz
    Invest in some decent poles.
Sunny Sports has Black Diamond Ergo Cork poles on sale for $57 - 18oz.

Nice one 4 eye - I wasn't willing to go there - but you nailed it... Still don't like the army bag but what are you going to do?

I went back and weighed my largest heaviest knife I use in Pest control and its 4oz... what ever you got, loose that too. keep the micro Swiss, get a hardened steel lightweight not Swiss see my gallery - I have an old 3oz one I rescued from a farmers market.

dehydrate your wet wipes, wet them when you need them.
use your spare spare of boxers as swimming shorts- ie, swim in your boxers that you've been hiking in, (bonus- no awkward changing- just strip down and swim) Or- just use the swimming shorts as your shorts.

Can you use the shampoo as soap, ditching the soap, or ditch the shampoo?

Put one of the water purifiers in your bounce box to switch them up, if you're concerned about the long term impact of either (esp. the iodine). Put the book in the same box.

You guys have "McDonalds, McCafe" over there? You can get long handled plastic spoons there that are pretty light weight.
+1 for freezer bag cooking. It's amazing. and the cat stove.
Can you use the steel cup as your pot? then you could ditch the pot- or ditch the cup- either drink out of you pot, or get a lighter (plastic)mug.

Look at a MYOG tarp or tarp tent.

I carry flip flops, but if I had a tent with a small vestibule, I wouldn't carry the flip flops.
