In a few Northern Virginia locales, the Bluemont Concert Series has outdoor concerts on courthouse lawns. Music is generally folky.
One of the most famous ongoing festivals - I believe the longest-running annual festival - is the Old Time Fiddlers Convention in Galax, VA. The nearest AT point is somewhere between Damascus and Atkins.
And then in Massachusetts, there's concerts at Tanglewood where the Boston Symphony and Boston Pops play in the summer.
These are just off the top of my head and are likely the tip of the iceberg. I'm sure you'll find scads more.
