Everyone has their own clock and yardstick

    Time and space are relative

Each of us carries our own clock, our own monitor of the passage of time. Each clock is equally precise, yet when we move relative to one another, these clocks do not agree. They fall out of synchronization; they measure different amounts of elapsed time between two chosen events. The same is true of distance. Each of us carries our own yardstick, our own monitor of distance in space. Each yardstick is equally precise, yet when we move relative to one another, these yardsticks do not agree; they measure different distances between the locations of two specified events.

So if I start at Katahdin tonight,
and hike the trail faster than light,
I'll be travelling backwards, in a relative way,
    and will summit Springer yesterday.
    Right?

I believe so. Once you could place a phone call in Paris to New York, take the Concord and arrive in New York in time to answer your own call.

if you start at katahdin, you're simultaneously finishing at springer. It takes , on the average, 5-6 months for your brain to process this data.

I trust that Jester will film his entire hike for our entertainment. I hope so!

As for our AT speed record attempt friend...I alternate between feeling pity for someone so delusional and feeling annoyed at his incredible arrogance. Who is he to think that no one of worth has pitted their bodies against the challenge of the AT? That he is unique among humans in his determination and toughness? What an arrogant twit!

It might be nice to maintain a page of links to the more preposterous speed hike attempts, and to forward that to new nitwits as they come along, year after year.

Would not wish anyone bad luck, but.................no way Jose. its getting ready to snow in PA, it will be lonely, cold and nasty out there. I was in NH in September, as an example, the UP to Mt Moosilauke is a tough one, would NOT want to do that if snowy or icy, and that is about 2 miles worth of AT

FYI - I just checked and there have been no updates on the "daily update" page since 10/19.

Looks like he has a good weather window on the 2nd to climb Katahdin if the forecast holds http://www.mountain-forecast.com/pea...forecasts/1000 I don't know if you have to preregister to climb or do a solo form this time of year. I know you do after Dec 1 (7 days in advance).

I was out in the storm last night and I wouldn't have wanted to have been up there in it. Hurricane force winds and -20 wind chill on higher summits with up to 20" snow in the southern Whites. All you can do when it gets like that is get off the ridge, hunker down, and ride it out.

I suspect the one 30 mile day he did in Mass was enough to show what an impossible feat he had set out to do and he has already gone home with his tail between his legs...

I am announcing my attempt at a record, when I hike the AT I intend to take it slow and set a record for the highest level of enjoyment. Personally I believe my record will be unbeatable.

Yeah and he did 4 miles in one hour. I bet it got slower after that. If he did hold that rate he'll need to do 15 hours a day. Hope he has a bright headlamp.

Buffalo Skipper - I think that your post ends this discussion, come on, if yu are going to try and set any record, put the chips in your favor, at least a little!

Wyoming Skateboarder completed a 354-day flip-flop thru-hike in 1999. To my knowledge, this is the longest hike that meets the "one-year" rule for a thru-hike.
If people spent less time being offended and more time actually living, we'd all be a whole lot happier!
