We are doing the Smoky Mnt. Section of the AT Nov 6th-13th (plus some side trails) and don't want to hit all of the SOBOs. Where will most be by then?? Done, south og Fontana, in the park??
Thanks,
Davis

The thing with Sobos. It can be rush of them one day and not see any for about a week.
But I am guessing they are probably already hitting Damaucus to the Smokies. Contact Curtis at Standing Bear Farm. He can probably give you a traffic report.
If you are worried about room in the shelters, you will be granted 1st dibs since you are not thru-hikers. Most thrus rather camp than sleep in shelters.

They are usually so spread out they are not an issue. You may actually like meeting them too.
There were several SOBO's in Damascus today when I left. I've been running into SOBO's each day on the trail, and they say there is a big wave of SOBO's in Virginia right now.
I ran into several Sobo's in the Smokies over the weekend when I was up there hiking. I met "Leaf" and three others (young people) whose names I did not get. They are definitely down there. Leaf said he started in Maine in June. I met him at Spence Shelter.
Ran into a SOBO at Gathland SP, MD, yesterday. He's in Virginia by now.
about a dozen were in Franklin, NC last week.
Ran into a few in Md last weekend by Annapolis Rock.
We met about 10 SOBO's during 10/8~10/11 in the Smokies. No large groups, they were all hiking in pairs putting in 20~30 miles per day.
SOBO are beginning to finish. Saw Deal, Fire Marshall, and Steady today between Blackwell Creek and Justus Creek. They started June 6 and will finish tomorrow.
I passed 6 sobos hiking together in GA last week. 5 dudes and one girl. They would have got done on Friday. Was very impressed at their speed and what they were about to complete. They all said hi or hello and kept trucking. Once they got past me 2 or 3 yelled 'we love you!'. I took it as section hiker hazing but it was in fun.
Passed 4 SOBO thrus in the northern Smokies around October 6th, including The Lewis & Mark Experience. They may be finishing today, or very soon.
