Bears abound in PA; big MoFos too. Doesn't mean you should be a puss though. Eat well, sleep well; the bears do. Watch where they go (sign) for blueberries and blackberries in summer. Watch where they've been in late fall (scratches). Here are some examples.

He who dies with the most toys, still dies.
My most recent sighting was in mid September. I had just pulled out of the Cades Cove picnic area in GSMNP and there he was near the side of the road. By the time I got my camera out he was long gone.....
Seeing bears has little to do with how many exist in an area, but whether the area is hunted. Hunted bears are rarely seen. Protected bears wander in sight of humans because they have learned that humans are both harmless and a good source of food.
The forested and mountain areas of Maine have some of the highest concentrations of bears in the east. But hikers see them only rarely, except in Baxter Park where hunting is prohibited.

Wild Turkey makes one dumber than a bear.

My daughter Grass and I hiked the SNP this summer. We took a week and saw bears each and every day. Got several photos, mostly blurry or of bear butts. LOL
