    :banana Water filtration

How do you know what water NOT to attempt to filter with traditional filtering techniques on the AT?

Well I filtered water once that had salamander babies in it. It was the only water available at the time, and it looked good to me.

If there's a mine directly upstream, the local hillsides are denuded of all vegetation, and there's a distinct acid smell to the water.

I do not use aqua mira with outlets from beaver ponds and in cow pastures.

Thank you. It sounds as if pretty much all sources can be filtered.

garlic/onion smell is a bad sign too. But you won't see much of that on the AT

I gotta laugh because this is the only time I do use Aquamira! It's the only reason I carry it, actually. Gotta love Whiteblaze--you get the whole range of advice and experience, all of it valid to someone.

I had to read it a couple of times. I nuke it especially if there is a beaver pond or cow pasture. I also treat if there has been a dry spell. and in low lying areas. Other than that, drink up

Salamanders and other amphibians are a sign of good water.
