Was wondering if the exact half way point is north or south of the Pine Grove Furnance Store?
Thanks

The 2011 AT Guide puts it at 1090.5, noting that it tends to change every year.
The 2011 AT Guide mentions a thru-hiker using GPS to record every waypoint in 2010.
I am assuming the 2011 AT Guide uses this data but I am not certain.
Yup, 1,090.5 is the new halfway marker (built and erected by ALDHA volunteers), about 3.2 south of the park. Until recently it was about a mile north of the park. The old marker is going in the museum.

The new MID-POINT marker was installed the first week of May 2011 and is located between Toms Run Shelter and Michaux Road just SOUTH of Pine Grove Furnace. As SLY indicated the old marker is now propped up against the porch at the A.T. Museum
Interesting article about it here: http://www.cumberlink.com/news/local...cc4c002e0.html
Just think how much the midpoint will have to be moved
once they extend the Trail south into the mountains of Florida....
The way Bob Peoples and the Tennessee Eastman crew makes new trails, the halfway marker will be in Maryland in a few years !!!

You're off a mile, or two...
Appalachian Trail Conservancy Puts New Official Length of the Appalachian Trail at 2,181.0 Miles
Harpers Ferry, WV (December 15, 2010)—The Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC) has recently announced in the 2011 Appalachian Trail Data Book that the new official length of the Appalachian Trail is 2,181.0 miles. Relocations and re-measurements in 2010 meant an additional 1.9 miles for the legendary Appalachian Trail (A.T.). Every December, the latest mileage and shelter information for the 11 official guides is updated from volunteers who are constantly improving the trail, with volunteer Daniel D. Chazin of Teaneck, N.J., pulling it all together since 1983. This year, increases were reported for Massachusetts–Connecticut (0.2 mile), New York–New Jersey (0.9 mile), central Virginia (0.1 mile), and Tennessee–North Carolina (0.9 mile), while the southwest Virginia mileage was reduced by 0.1 mile.

There's a new marker? I tried to figure out the half-way point just using dead reckoning based on my average hiking pace and the time from the last known point - whatever shelter is just south - during my '09 thru. Mid-point turned out to be a mud puddle, which was kind of fitting considering the weather during the '09 season. Yes, it was raining at the time.

If I'm not mistaken, in 2009, the old Midpoint Marker was still up at 1,093.8 (from Springer), 4.2 miles north of the actual midpoint mark (1,089.7 or 0.6 mi N of Tom's Run Shelter) for that year.
Earlier this year, before they took it down to put in the museum, the old Midpoint Marker was at 1,094.7 (from Springer), again 4.2 miles north of the actual midpoint mark (1,090.5 or 0.5 mi N of Tom's Run).
Does that make sense? Haha... not a clue.

Maybe the marker should be on wheels so it can be moved ever year?
(Actually, they do move the south pole marker every year..http://www.newscientist.com/blog/sho...-new-year.html)

No Mags someone pretending to be you would fool with it and move it to Harper's Ferry! Now that would suck.
Dogs are excellent judges of character, this fact goes a long way toward explaining why some people don't like being around them.
