    Default Amtrak Question

So I just booked my ticket from Newark to Gainsville on Amtrak and they list restrictions as to the size of carry on baggage that seem to be smaller than my backpack. Has anybody had an issue with carrying theirs on or is this no big deal?

No big deal. The overhead rack is a lot bigger then the ones in busses and airplanes. I had no trouble putting my pack up there, which is of average size. (3500 cu-in or there abouts). I'll be getting on a train myself in about 10 days...

Like above - used Amtrak from Hartford to Gainesville, with train changes and no problem with the pack. Train wasn't crowded so I just t threw the pack onto the seat next to me for the first two trains.

I had two canisters with me in my pack - they never questioned it.

Is there a list of Amtrak stations close to the AT?

Amtraks the best way to travel. No TSA no weirdoes feeling you up in order to board. There is a lounge car where you can chill at tables or mingle with other people. Oh and they let you bring your own booze on board. A case of bear or bottles of wine or booze are totally chill on the train. For larger luggage there are bins where you enter to store them if they cant fit in the large overhead rack things.

I went to Walmart and bought a duffle bag and stuffed my fully loaded Catalyst and collapsed hiking poles in it and didn't have any problems at all.

If your getting on at just a stop, they really don't care unless it's obnoxious. If your getting on at a station, they might check for weight and size. Union station in Chicago isn't too strict, when I get on in royal oak michigan they don't check at all (no station at all, just a loading platform).

And yes there is TSA at major Amtrack stations. You can see the German shepards all over the place in union station in Chicago.

The German shepards at Union Station are not TSA. They weren't when I was there in Oct of '09. They were held by military type guys which is straight up obnoxious in a free country. Damm Fascists. The dogs weren't working either just sitting next to their handler. If they were working they would be sniffing around. Those creeps definitely have to go, theres no reason to violate the 4th amendment in the name of imagined security woes.

Dogs do offer some good therapy for sure. I love them. Homeland security would love having every citizen scrutinized by them too. We've lost our freedoms and some fools are cool with that, which is very sad. Very sad indeed.
