    Thumbs up 2011 hiker sightings

It took awhile, but we've finally started to have some NOBO's trickle through. Was at Kincora earlier today and met the following hiker:

    Phil

Phil started in Jan and is currently nursing an injured knee. Get well!

    See you on the trail,
    mt squid

    some observations

Just to let everyone know: when I encounter someone on the trail, I ask their permission to post here. When you meet a hiker you might also ask them if they mind. There might be a few that don't want their whereabouts known.

Met a thru hiker named James on the top of Pond Mtn before Watauga Lake on Friday evening. I think he was headed for the shelter at the lake. Said he started in late January also.

Am in Franklin tonight at Ron Haven's Budget Motel. Several are here. Gentle Ben. Triton (BeautifulPoetMan on WB). Ronin (Brian321 on WB). Walrus. And a couple others. Several have been riding out a storm for the last day or two.

Holy crap, where was he? Gotta be the same guy I met on Avery Peak last year. He was all sorts of banged up, and had only come about 200 miles in four months. The shape he was in, I didn't know if he could make it off the mountain.

Gave Bastard Catfish a ride into Erwin the other day. Erwin is starting to look like a hiker town again...

I've talked to several NOBO's over the past few weeks. Can't remember a single trail name besides Indiana Jones... One other guy was from Belgium

Saw a "thru hiker" at Low Gap on St. Patrick's Day traveling very slow with 2 pitbulls that he was attempting too "save" as post fighting dogs. The one was too mean to let anyone get near. His answer was that "usually" the dog is friendly to people, it just hates other dogs. All other dogs at the shelter were kept on leashes to avoid a fight but the 2 pitbulls got into a fight and one severely injured the others eye pulling it from the socket. The hiker then put 1 on a leash in one end of the shelter and the other on a wire run on the other end of the shelter preventing anyone else from staying in the shelter. Everyone left the next morning except him and the 2 dogs. The local USFS office was notified the next day about the situation. I don't know if he and the dogs are still out there but hikers beware...THEY ARE NOT FRIENDLY AND HAVE ALREADY ATTACKED 3 OTHER DOGS BEFORE REACHING LOW GAP.

Mods: wasn't sure how to list this info or how / where to start a new thread about it. Please move this post to an appropriate location.

Trailblazer- 1st NoBo thru hiker just made it to Harpers Ferry. Ran into him a week ago hiking out of the SNP and past Front Royal. He started late Januray down at Springer and is still kicking (or should I say hiking) to make it to Maine.

Stumpknocker was at the ATC yesterday. He is headed south, believe he is hiking in for Trail Days.
