I did the exact same thing except, in order to save money on the shipment of my gear, I took the frame out of my pack and loaded some of it into my pack as a carry on. I shipped the rest via Fedex to the Hiker Hostel. Instead of a 40lb box it was only 25lbs. I shipped the trekking poles separately inside a poster tube.

I did think about hike down to spring and back then up to katahdin and back...it would save in figuring out logistics and I would have hiked it twice

Default easiest way to Springer Mountain

    The Easiest way to Springer...

Fly into Atlanta (so you get there quick and not exhausted).

www.Hikerhostel.com. They have (better check to make sure they still do) a deal where you get the night, breakfast, and shuttle to start of your hike all for one low price. I think it was 15-20 bucks back in 2006. you can also get fuel from them. They take mail drops as well.

    i'd still take the train

to clarify the above; its $75 and its only available during thru hiker season as defined by the folks at the hiker hostel. thru hiker season is now over.

its my understanding that the service is still offered off season, however they charge more.
