    Default PB Sauce tips?

Got this recipe for peanut butter sauce out of a April 2000 BPer. But when I tried it, the sauce was way too thin and watery. How can I thicken it up?

    1 cup water
    1/2 cup of PB
    1/4 tsp of garlic powder
1 1/2 Tbsp of soy sauce
pinch of cayenne--I used powdered red pepper

    Optional
    2 Tbsp of vinegar--didn't use
3 Tbsp of powdered milk--did use

    Is the obvious answer, flour?

less obvious answer - instant potatoes - will thicken up anything too wet

alternatively - play with the amount of water till you like it

Flour would work if you are cooking the sauce like gravy.

Just add the water last and quit when you have the consistency you want.

Good idea on adding water last. I'll try that with the next experiment. Maybe potatoes?

BTW, any idea where I can pick up soy sauce packets?

At your favorite Chinese take out place. Great source of various sauces.

My local health food store sells dehydrated refried beans in bulk. Very good, and works well for thickening, I discovered. Don't think it'd go well with peanut butter, though.

Yeah, I know I can do that. But the hike I'm planning on doing requires about 550 dinners. Knowing that only a small percentage of those will require soy sauce packets, it's not like I can just walk into an Asian place and ask for several dozen packets.

i did exactly that. youll be surprised how many packets a sales clerk can fit into a bag when you slip them a 5 dollar bill. (im paying for the convenience, and yes to me its worth not carrying big plastic no spill bottles. besides when it comes to no spill, soy sauce has diplomatic immunity apparently) i brought 5 bucks to a chinese place (soy sauce, duck sauce, sweet n sour sauce) and brought 5 bucks to a KFC ("butter" packets, honey, ketchup, mustard, salt, pepper). well worth the small change/ hassle avoidance. plus i didnt have to feel like a bum asking for sauces i was paying them for it whether the 5 bucks went into the register or the guys pocket is none of my concern
I broke a mirror in my house. I'm supposed to get seven years bad luck but my lawyer thinks he can get me five.

Sorry, I wasn't thinking thru-hiking. (Although if you stop off at various Chinese places along the way, you could probably keep yourself pretty stocked up)

But this place has single servings of, well, everything!! http://www.minimus.biz/

I have done a number of peanut sauces over the years:

My personal favorite is this one:

This is also a good one:

A good peanut sauce doesn't need milk IMO. You DO need the vinegar though for the right taste And peanut sauces do thicken up upon standing (at least mine do)

    Good luck!!

I made my own peanut butter for my first CDT hike.
I just used peanuts (good ones) and ran them through one of those hand crank meat grinders that you attach to a table.
Then i added honey and white raisins.
    It was great.

I would think the only reason you would add water is to make use of the powdered milk.

I just made similar this week and came up too dry. More water next time. Also, consider some fresh grated ginger.
