    Default My BF has been infected

    My partner attempted to do a 700 mile section hike last year but fell on Apache Peak and sprained his ankle. With only 170+ miles of the trail under his feet, here's what he said to me yesterday evening:

    "I don't know what's the matter with me. All I can think about is the trail. I can't work. I don't even care about work anymore. All I think about is hiking the PCT."

    I'm so glad he said that. It's like finally he understands me!
    It's a virus, I'm telling you. It ruins your life.
    Some knew me as Piper, others as just Diane.
    I hiked the PCT: Mexico to Mt. Shasta, 2008. Santa Barbara to Canada, 2009.

    Pretty much. I'm probably going to be living in my car when I'm done with my hike.

    I totally agree that it is a infection and the only cure is to hike more.....until your legs fall off...Enjoy the virus ;-)

    It's not only a virus it's a narcotic. Very addictive. I'm having some back issues and have been limited to a few miles around the house and I'm having some bad withdrawals. Can't wait for this to go away so I can strap on my pack again.

    I'm happy for you and your partner!

    I'm so glad I'm infected!! I don't think my wife will ever be. Maybe my 5 yr old daughter will be someday. She's certainly a nature girl,,, let's see how it progresses.

    I wish I could take my infection meds (hiking) more often. Being dad/husband w/ 2 jobs limits my med intake.

    That's quite a switch from a few months ago, when you thought he was taking root on the sofa.

    Nice! Now that completing the AT is within sight this year I am already salavating over getting on the PCT in 2012.

    Yeah, I feel this way exactly. I thought it would go away after my thru, but it only made it worse. I have trouble concentrating on schoolwork or anything else. All I can think about is a nice, sunny day, with the trail winding ahead of me and a cool wind in my face.

    Default Hiker Trash

    I waited 17 years before I had the guts to go back and attempt the PCT again. I finished in 2009 and right there at monument 78 on the Canadian border I knew I would hike the CDT. I went back to work but every spare moment that winter I was either training or planning. The CDT was like a dream walk last year. Sitting at the northern teminus next to Waterton lake in Alberta I knew I would hike again.
    This year I will hike the AT. I am pretty sure the cycle wont end there either. I could revist the PCT after that, or rehike the CDT taking the other alternate routes, or i could hike some of the other long distance trails.
    Long Distance hiking gets into your blood. The simple, beautiful lifestyle, and the need for very few possesions. You meet so many great people along the the way it is very humbling. It's hard work but rewarding in a way that transends monetary rewards.
    You can make more money.. but you can't make more time.

    I wish I had more money so I could have more time. Or more courage and a campershell. I read an article yesterday comparing the CDT to the PCT and now I want to hike the CDT.

    It's good for my BF because he's got a ton of money and the stress of his job is going to kill him. He could retire and hike forever. Me? Not so much. I'm a 5-figure thousandaire. So it's bad I'm obsessed because I should work hard and save up money for my future. It's good he's obsessed because he needs to get out there and start living.
