Doesn't ATC already award honorary life memberships? Just another case of duplicating efforts and drawing attention away from where it ought to be directed.

My vote is Grandma Gatewood she has an amazing story and was the first known woman to thru hike and at the age of 67 and back in the day when women were taught not to be unique.

    Default Why?

While I heartily have supported the formation of the A.T. Museum, I'm not so convinced of the need for a "Hall of Fame". It sounds too eliteist to me.

I would love to nominate all the wonderful trail angels who helped me on my SOBO. They were great.

I nominate South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford. An avid hiker, he brought lots of attention to the trail promoting it as a great place to get away from it all!

Mags have to agree with Lyndon Johnson nomination as well. The story goes LBJ and Lady Bird were driveing to DC when he became a Senator. She wasn't thrilled with the Seanery do to signs and such. She pushed LBJ for wildflower protection area's as well as the National Trails system. This is been well documented at his library and I am allumni of the same University. I Had to add why nominate him.

Then you got it wrong. Ladybird should be nominated. Many times there's a good woman standing behind the man's goals...

might be fun to have a hall of shame and one of lame, but fame?no one wants fame who hikes. a hall of shame would be way more fun for us. first up? "the port clinton poopers"
next,..an exhibit called"fountain of fakers"a fountain full of manure with nametags sticking out. and we'll need a"wall of worry", with things like a canoe paddle and canned water and a flair riffle.lol.

I don't see it as elitist. Most people on this board are probably aware of many people who were instrumental in making the AT what it is today. Inn most cases, these are not people we have ever met. We only know about them because someone has taken the time to tell us about their accomplishments.
