Default Missing "camper" around Erwin TN

Just ran across this article today in the local news here in Tennessee. Apparently this man is missing near the Erwin area.

Man, it seems like a lot people are going missing this year.
Wilderness is not a luxury but a necessity of the human spirit, and as vital to our lives as water and good bread.

300 lbs and heart problems...Sad to hear.
Dogs are excellent judges of character, this fact goes a long way toward explaining why some people don't like being around them.

Well dang... I hiked the 8 mile section between Indian Grave Gap and Uncle Johnny's yesterday and didn't see anything out of the ordinary. A hunter and 2 hikers - that was it.

Wonder if he went north or south?

I think they said he was planning on walking near the AT. He probably wanted to have an adventure so he decided to go on a bushwack. I think hes alive, just a bit lost.

    He's probably at Lost Cove....

(That would be funny under different circumstances...)

Seems like he was lost and doesn't want to admit it.

A good reason to carry a compass around Erwin: If you can walk a straight line in any direction you'll come to a highway before you starve to death.

Another news article concerning the AT that didn't get picked up by the AT RSS feeds forum.

The two key pieces of information from the intiial article

Wigand said Vandenboss was an outdoor and camping enthusiast, who had spent time hiking in Texas.

"He also stayed in the New Mexico Mountains for about three months," Hughes said. "He loves the outdoors."

Prior SAR experience tells me this guy likes to get into the woods and stay there for a while, NOT on or near busy trails
