which exit will i need to know for the trail head? my book says something like exit 451? also that would be I40 east right

Its the Waterville School Road exit. Last one before entering NC from TN. Its the same exit for Standing Bear and Big Creek Ranger Station.

depends where you're coming from... would be I-40 West if you were coming from Asheville. It's Waterville regardless...

Yes, although one of the westbound lanes is still closed, which can slow down traffic.
