Same way you get one in a fraternity. Someone gives it to you.
OR... you can give yourself a trail name. I think it might mean more to you if someone gives it to you.
I gave myself one and never had a second thought. But I also think it is different for section hikers and thru-hikers.
If you want your own, pick it. If you prefer one be chosen for you, let that happen. As the saying goes, HYOH (Hike Your Own Hike).

I called myself Totem for a while because somebody thought that was my trail name for some reason.
Then, on suggestion of my friends, I changed it to manwich, because I make and dehydrate manwich (sloppy joes) for section hiking and cook them into tortillas.
Kinda like a frat, without the hazing and hapless idiocy.
up over the hills, theres nothing to fear
theres a pub across the way with whisky and beer

but it ain't so bad if you have a great big bottle o'scotch
You can start with quirks or obsessions. Is there one soda that you only drink. Or snack that you always have to eat.
It can also relate to an incident. Did you ever fall in a funny way or in funny place.
Something you always talk about. Something you always where. A game you play on trail.
Then no real meaning at all.
I named myself. Tennesse being my original home state. Viking because my favorite book deals with vikings.

Name yourself unless you like being called snores-a-lot or stinky feet... or being forever mistaken for someone who makes alky stoves.
Do not give yourself a trail name as it's pointless and there's no story behind it. It's much better to be given one.
Maybe so, but when someone asks you how you received that trail name, is it more fun to say, I made it up or give some sweet-or stupid-story about how you received it.
Also, if someone gives you a name, it's less likely that it will be duplicated.
No offense Lone Wolf, as I know you're revered as a God on here, but I met 4 Lone Wolfs this past summer alone. There were probably 20 of them on the trail at any given moment.
For reference, my actual trail name is Saint Peter or Mr. Timebomb the Saint.
This thread reminds me of a podcast on The Dirtbag Diaries called The Adventures of Beansprout - where a guy goes into how he got his nickname from some environmentalists.
