Default "Trail Angels" Film to be premiered at Trail Days

Daniel Peddle’s (aka Question) film “Trail Angels” to be shown at Trail Days in Damascus, VA. “We are really really proud of the film. Each of your stories culminate in a very uplifting experience! It has been an incredible journey making this movie. My goal is to spread your words of love and generosity. We really need this message these days and I hope the film will somehow make a way in this world and through your ideals, will inspire many many people!”
Daniel Peddle's film 'Trail Angels' is an inspiring portrait of unsung heroes who have made it their quest to help the seasonal thru hikers of the Appalachian Trail, a pilgrimage of five million footsteps. Mala, Baltimore Jack, Miss Janet, and Trail Angel Mary are working class Americans who have embraced The Golden Rule in spite of the sacrifices it often requires. For those willing to go the distance, a community based on kindness and simplicity emerges from the backwoods of America.

I enjoyed watching the movie at Trail Days. It was interesting and, at times, funny. It was great to watch it with the "stars" right there in attendance. It was unfortunate that the lighting and sound were poor given the venue and the daylight hours, and the small sound system, but I still enjoyed it. I would like to view it again when I can see it and hear it better. Will it be available soon as a DVD? I was a bit surprised that there were not DVD's for sale. I probably would have bought one.

There is a blog for this film. trailangels.blogspot.com Here you can read Daniels Peddle's reaction after the showing of the film at traildays and the reason he chose to make this film. It also has a link to his distribution company.
Daniel told me at traildays that release will be in about 3 months. You can email him if you want more info. His email is on the blog page.

I saw it at TD too! Great documentary. I'd love to buy a copy too and have contacted the distribution company. Will post information when they respond.

Default High price for this doc

Really liked the trailer. Contacted these folks and they want $42 + shipping for the DVD.....kind of steep. Guess I don't need to see it that badly.

    Ouch! I agree Jeff.

Independent films like this are perfect for distribution as On-Demand or Download options instead of the pricier traditional "burn, package, and ship" methods.

I think it's mainly a problem of everyone needing a cut. If you produce, direct, edit, and distribute it yourself, the traditional method isn't that pricey -- and that's how many trail movies are made, including mine. I'd be charging the same amount regardless of whether it was on a DVD or downloadable. The actual physical production of DVDs isn't that expensive.

I own alot of trail porn DVDs, but thats the most expensive one I've seen. Most are about $20, though a few are around $30. No matter how good it is, I think $40 is going to really limit the number of potential buyers.

It's priced that high because there ARE a limited number of potential buyers.

actually it is not yet available in the mass market...hence the price which reflects the fact they have to actually make you a copy, package it, mail it...once it hits itunes, netflix, amazon, etc it will be priced like a reg dvd...

I enjoyed the movie very much.

You could have shown more angels, I thought.

Making a copy, slipping it in a cover and mailing it takes little time and money.

I'm a little uneasy about the thought of greed to profit above and beyond from magic and angels.

It is the most expensive DVD I've ever heard of.

Any plans to donate back to the trail?

Well, Nean, it kind of depends on what kind of copy they're making for you. They are not, I would imagine, duplicating onto a crappy Memorex DVD-R and photocopying a piece of paper to slide into a paper sleeve.

I know the advent of personal computers makes the following foreign (or the distant past) to some people, but here it is: some things are cheaper when you produce them in volume.

Think about books about the trail that are produced as Print On Demand books. A trade paperback of a POD book will usually run you between $18.00 and $25.00. This is because they make them one at a time.

A publisher that does large runs of books can make a profit selling the same format book for $14.00-$16.00.

Do I accuse Rick McKinney, whose book is $18.95, or Larry Luxenberg, whose book is $19.95, of being greedy, because I've seen similarly formatted books for cheaper?

    No.

You know why? Because any "thought[s] of greed to profit above and beyond" that I might have would be unfounded unless I actually knew the costs of production, and since I don't know that, it wouldn't even occur to me to bring it up in public.

And were anyone to suggest such a thing about me in regards to a trail project I was working on and then in the same post ask me if I was going to donate back to the trail, I honestly think my response would be, "that post was a joke, right?"

and as i explained in an earlier post...the price 7th Art is giving people is because the film is not yet available officially for mass market...(we will encourage them to not offer it at all until its priced better) there are many steps between "finishing" a film and getting it on a shelf (or ready for downloading) for a reasonable price...Trail Angels is only starting this journey...

documentary filmmaking is generally speaking a labor of love, there is certainly no greed involved and highly unlikely there will be any profit...should by some stroke of fortune Trail Angels makes a profit, donating back to the AT goes without saying...would hope to think one can see from the film itself our hearts are in the right place

Good info Jester. Still, I've bought lots of books in the 20$ range. Seems reasonable.

A 42+"shipping" DVD IS above and betond anything I've ever heard of.

I don't mind sharing my thoughts, (not accusations) so I do.........and I appreciate the response.

Maybe if I saw the beakdown in cost-(then I would know)- I'd say thats a great buy, your only making 3-4$!?! Thank you for educating me.

Like the dvd cost ?$ and the sleeve cost ?$ and its ?$ to mail so, whats your problem, would be fine.

Again, I really liked seeing my friends on the big screen and I will own a copy when I can afford one!

Default Trail Angels to be shown in Film Festivals

The film was shown at the Gathering 2010. It received a grand round of applause and many personal comments to me about how much they liked the film. Sound was not good for the showing but the majority of the crowd stayed till the end despite straining to hear. Anyone who is interested in reading more about the Director and the reason he chose to make this movie can visit his site. It's a great story. It also has listings for other Film Festivals including one in VA. http://trailangels.blogspot.com/?spref=fb

Just seen Trail Angels in Bethlehem, NH last week. Really enjoyed it! Was surprised how many folks came out to see it. Many were very unfamiliar with the AT.
