Approach Trail - yes- Benton Mckaye/ Blue Ridge

i've never through hiked AT before, but I figured if I was going to do it, I might as well do the whole damn east coast! March 5 will find me stepping out on the Florida Trail.

I should be on Springer by May 20, Lord willin' and the creek don't rise!

Hi Whiteblazers, I'm new to this forum, but I've already learned a great deal from it to help me prepare, thank you.
    Welcome Jang!!!

The "Approach Trail" is a 8.8 mile spur trail that starts near the Amicalola Falls Lodge and runs up to the summit of Springer Mt., where the AT officially begins.

Some people choose to walk that trail, some get dropped off closer to the summit. There's a parking area about 1.2 miles north of the summit - you would walk back south, sign the registry, then head back north toward Maine!

I could be off a bit on the official miles, but that's a rough estimate.

    See you on the trail!!!

Start day is officially March 15.

As for the approach trail, I'm not so sure now that I know what it actually is! Can people camp overnight? I'm thinking I might not be able to make the whole 8.8 miles in my first go

You'll be right behind me - if you see a turtle tipped over onto it's shell, that would be me. Do me a favor and tip me back over.

Did you get all your hammock insulation squared away???

Black Gap Shelter is 7.3 mi in.

Alternatively, if you start from FS42, you can stay at Springer Mountain Shelter (.8 mi SOBO), Stover Creek Shelter (2.8 mi from Springer) or Hawk Mountain Shelter (7.8 mi from Springer).

    Don't forget some sunscreen.

    See you on the trail,

Hey I'm Guino and I'm a NOBO'r! Starting after finals week at Northern Arizona University. Still have to figure out the day of my last final. And I'll do whatever's clever as far as the approach trail is concerned. I'm going to do the whole thing over summer break. I know, I know. A 100 day hike is fast but that's all the time I have before school starts again. I will be traveling light and fast. See you all out there.

    Default Nobe 4/4/11

My name is Wishful1015 and I'm planning fly into Atlanta on or about 4/4/11. I'll have a wing and a prayer in my pack, and rely on both quite heavily.

Can't wait to meet you Turtle Feet! I had a 3 toed box turtle three years ago and enjoyed watching him try to right himself :P He always figured it out, and so will you!

Yes, I did get my insulation figured out. Waiting for my 3 season Phoenix underquilt to come in so that I can play/practice setting it up. Thanks for asking!

Thank you, Mountain Squid! This information helps. I'll go for the approach trail, and if needed I'll just bust out my hammock when I'm good and ready to call it a day.
