    Default Crazy ideas for hiker Olympic events

    I believe we might have something here which could spice up the Olympics a bit and certainly be entertaining to watch.

    What hiker Olympic events would you like to see

    > Fastest to fjord a turbulent river on unstable rocks with a 30lb backpack on.

    Deductions for any breakage in form , like busting your arse .

    In all seriousness; Wouldn't some kind of Long Distance Trail run on the AT, CDT, or PCT be an excellent summer olympic event?

    I mean illegal stealth campers. Illegal stelth hikers seems like a concern for folks along the Rio Grande. How about bonus points if you get one of them as well.

    I think ultradistance would be interesting. Whoever gets the most miles in between the opening and closing ceremonies wins.

    For hiking, perhaps the same idea, except you have to carry a fixed amount of gear, scaled to your height maybe, maybe height squared, so 36 pounds for 6 feet, 25 pounds for 5 feet tall, plus all the food for the two weeks. Maybe a rule that you have to finish with the same body weight you start at, at the same level of hydration.

    The trouble with such events is that people could push themselves too hard. The marathon is relatively easy to control. Ultradistance could get way out of hand. I don't know what it is like now, but I think for the most part they keep it safe. Might be harder to do with a gold medal on the line. Not sure.

    Quickest to set up a standard 2 man tent with stakes & guy lines ;

    *for added entertainment purposes tent fly is in a stuff sack 15 ft up a bear pole.

    * tent stakes are scattered in a circle around camp and must be retrieved one at a time.

    The best bear-bagger. Contestants judged on weighted combination of speed, height of bag, weight of bag, distance from tree trunk, and inclusiveness of all appropriate items e.g. points off if you forget to include your toiletries.

    Only to find out it's occupied! You then have to run back to the shelter, grab the TP you forgot and find a place in the woods!
