Sounds like the window insulation plastic is going to be my best shot. Not a big deal if it doesn't work, but I might as well try to cut 3oz from my back.

I will say that I really liked the Tyvek in the desert because it provided a lot of additional protection from rocks & thorns, plus I could cowboy camp on it (for whatever reason, the insects didn't like crawling on the material).

Thorns: I just tested a piece of the window insulation (polycryo) with a sharp pencil point and it punctures fairly easily, so I don't think it'll be great with thorns. It is surprisingly strong for its weight but maybe not with thorms. I don't have any tyvek to compare; I suspect the tyvek is both stronger and more puncture resistant.

Has anyone taken a close look at the blue and brown tarps at HD and Lowe's They make some that if cut to size should be lightweight, tough and waterproof. I don't know but think the edges could be heat sealed if necessary. The heavy grommets and doubled edges of a whole tarp seemingly will make them too heavy as a total unit. They are really cheap and may be worth an experiment. I am thinking of checking one out just to see.

Exactly. I’ve bought and used several.

I order 1.5 mil Exterior Patio Door film from Ace Hardware Online. Ships free to my local Ace store. $10 for the last one I bought. I can get 3 ground sheets for my TarpTent SS 1 from a box of film. And a roll of double stick tape too.

I don't know about the toughness. My dog jumped on a chair near the widow and immediately put her claw through it.

Did the whole PCT with 1 sheet of polycro, a few small tears on the corners where I had used pointy rocks to hold it down. Did get a minor tent puncture through it towards the end though.

    What thickness is yours?
The film comes in several thicknesses. I’ve seen 0.6, 0.7 and 1.5 mil from various online sources.
In the absence of any standard testing, I bought 1.5 mil.
