    International Appalachian Trail
    December 2015

It's that time of year again when ramblers everywhere kick off their boots, put their feet up, and reflect
on the year's great adventures. For the International Appalachian Trail, 2015 was the year we extended to a new continent,
participated in the Appalachian Trail Conservancy Biennial and further embraced our geological and cultural heritage.

Along the way we hosted meetings, attended conventions and developed plans, but most importantly we welcomed, toured,
constructed and marked a myriad of IAT trails. We also developed new and closer relationships with Global Geoparks,
including many along the IAT route.

"What a WONDERFUL film it is ! It is SO FINE to see so many "trail-community members" having
the opportunity to speak and have an audience to hear them !

    ~ and with John Semour at Mojoe's in Damascus, VA;
~ and with Ranger Shearless at Shenandoah National Park, VA
~ with the Esters at Shaw's in Monson, Maine
~ and with varoius hikers and AT volunteers along the way !

    A MUSEUM MUSICAL FLASH MOB ! ~ & LATEST IAT/SIA NEWS LINK !

    Dear Appalachian Trail Museum Friends,

Here at the beginning of February, post Ground Hog Day at that,
and going well into "N'ARLEAN"S MARDI GRAS"and "RIO'S CARNIVAL" time,
I look back in retrospect to the recent past Christmas holiday period,
and find this performance I want to share with you. Perhaps one day when
our Appalachian Trail Museum has expanded into the upper floors, we
can enjoy a similar, albeit smaller, performance of a musical FLASH-MOB:

""Starting with a single cellist on the floor of the National Air and Space Museum's
"Milestones of Flight" gallery, and swelling to 120 musicians, The U.S. Air Force Band
exhilarated museum visitors with its first-ever flash mob. The four-minute performance
featured an original arrangement of "Jesu,Joy of Man's Desiring/Joy to the World,"
led by the band's commander and conductor, Col. Larry H. Lang. Unsuspecting museum visitors
including tourists and school groups were astonished as instrumentalists streamed into the gallery from
behind airplanes and space capsules, and vocalists burst into song from the Museum's second floor balcony.”

MANY THANKS to you who support the A. T. Museum's mission to preserve our AT history.

exhilarated museum visitors with its first-ever flash mob.

Not only does it reference the A. T. Museum on page 2, but has some articles of interest

    NEXT MONTH will be the A. T. KICK-OFF Festival (March 4 - 6) !
    F.Y.I. click on: http://www.atko.info/
Since many hikers begin the northbound through-hike in March, I thought
I'd pass along these two short films for your review ~ I hope you enjoy them:

FILM #1 ~ The Appalachian Trail, National Geographic
    Published on Jan 20, 2015
For more than half of the U.S. population, the Appalachian Trail is less than a day's drive away.
Yet despite its proximity to many major cities, few truly know the splendor of this national treasure.
National Geographic travels off the beaten track to discover the remote and often unknown corners
of the 5-million-step journey. ~ Click on this link (note, you can skip the advertisement):
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=expjsUj9dZo

FILM #2 ~ Flow: A Journey Through Culture and History on the Appalachian Trail
    Published on Apr 22, 2015
As part of an independent study for Wofford College Interim we took to the Appalachian Trail
(in the dead of winter) seeking to discover the depths of it's history and culture. What we found
exceeded even that. Somehow the brutality of the winter wilderness was overshadowed
by numerous counts of serendipitous grace, and we will never be the same because of it.
In this film, interviews with Jennifer Pharr Davis, Brian King, Kip Redick, Laurie Potteiger
and others shed light on the complexity of the history and culture of the AT.
Furthermore, our journey is a true testament to the indescribable power of
    "The Trail".

    A MOUNTAIN MUSIC TREAT !

I hope you enjoy these two links to some most excellent mountain bluegrass music ?

This is the music one can find being played each week back in the southern Appalachian
towns and even at the general stores in crossroad hamlets all along the AT !
~ wherever the local musicians can gather with those that enjoy hearing them and their special music.
Many times I've gone up to the community center in Shady Valley (up in the mountains outside
Damascus, VA where the Trail Days Festival is held) to enjoy this type of music. Ditto that for the hamlets
of Konarock and Whitetop (both in the shadow of Mt. Rogers, Virginia's highest mountain. And so it is for
many, in the Southern Appalachians along the AT where one hears this music still being played.

The following two links will take you to the first part and then the second part of a two-hour
show highlighting the Earls of Leicester's performance at the Trustees Theater during the
    2015 Savannah Music Festival.
This is the music of Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs as interpreted by the Earls of Leicester.

    Dear Appalachian Trail Museum Friends,

    THIS SATURDAY , March 26, 2016 ~ NOON to 4 pm
--> AT MUSEUM OPENS FOR SEASON ! <--

    CLEAN UP DAY REPORT :
"On Saturday, March 19th., under a cloudy sky, that threatened both rain and snow,
a group of hardy volunteers gathered on the rampatheater and made ready to prepare
the A. T. Museum and its grounds for The Museum's 2016 SEASON GRAND OPENING !

What started out as a crew of about 17 volunteers, both new faces and old Museum veterans, was DOUBLED
in strength when Boy Scout Troop 105 from Saints Philip and James Church, Exton, Penn. came by to help !
They were spending the weekend in the State Park .

Every floor of the building received some tender loving care; the transformation in every space was quite evident.
One of the grounds crew's accomplishments was to plant several pine trees near the new ramp,
as we start to blend the ramp into its surroundings.

A nice, refreshing spread was set up for the volunteers inside the main floor, and provided work fuel
in the form of fruit, cheeses and meats, deviled eggs, desserts and hot soup !
Many thanks to the suppliers of this delicious nourishment .

The rain held off and by Noon, The Museum and grounds were both ready to go.
Everyone seemed to have enjoyed a great time ~ PLUS - now The Museum is clean,
stocked, and awaiting its first official visitors of this 2016 season!
    Thank you all.
