this 2016 season. To see your Museum Board at work,

Default Landscaping at Museum ~ New Hours May 7th ~ Trail Days ~ May Park Programs ...more !

LANDSCAPE PLANTING WITH PHOTOS AT MUSEUM ~ NEW MUSEUM HOURS MAY 7th. !
~ TRAIL DAYS FESTIVAL ! ~ AT HALL OF FAME TICKETS ! ~ MAY PARK PROGRAMS ~ MORE !

    Dear Appalachian Trail Museum Friends,

Howard Davis (board member) drew up a landscape plan to do
an installation of large landscape specimens about The Museum.
He had already planted the small pines in the design.

Quite recently, Howard rounded up his crew of volunteers ~
Dan Taylor, Jay Sexton (Museum Treasurer) and Jack Adams (Chief of
Ramp Construction). Work began in earnest when the trailer full of plants
arrived ~ for photo, click on: CREW & TRAILER
The list of these large landscape specimens includes 3 Service Berry,
1 White Pine, and a Red Bud ! A Service Berry took Jay, Dan, and Howard
to drag it in a dolly over to its spot among the wood ramps !
~ for a photo, click on: DOLLY

Then on the other side of The Museum, Howard, Jack, and Jay brought the
large Red Bud down those ramps which go to the lower level.
~ view photo, click on: RED BUD & RAMPITHEATER
It was planted at the southwest corner of The Museum, wrapped around
by the stairs ~ to view, click on: RED BUD AT CORNER

Howard gave much attention and some hard work getting the Service Berries
and the White Pine situated into their new homes on the front northeast corner
    among the wood ramps.
~ to see photo, click on: HOWARD BETWEEN WOOD RAMPS
The final result is that the wood ramps wrap around this landscape planting,
so that in the future as they grow, a visitor to The Museum will walk among
totally native plant materials, such as are found most anywhere along the AT,
as they make their entrance into the Appalachian Trail Museum.

"Appalachian Trail Museum Friends, I traveled for two weeks,
May 4th. through May 17, spending about a week at the cabin
of John "Bodacious" Beaudet and Francis Figart in Flag Pond, Tenn.,
and then a week in Damascus, Virginia for the Trail Days Festival !

While at Flag Pond, I helped "Bodacious" stain all the walking sticks
    which will be handed out to this year's AT Hall of Fame inductees;
we did a little trail work on his section of the AT from Indian Grave Gap
    south; went up to Beauty Spot; walked into the Rocky Fork Wilderness;
and drove up through Wolf Laurel, then walked up then over 6,000 foot
Big Bald (really high-country with spectacular views, strong gale gusts,
and spots of ice still on the ground) !

Here are a few nice photos, click on each to view:

RED WOLF ON BIG BALD SUMMIT

John drove me up to Damascus on Monday, May 9th. and
I lodged in my usual room #2 at Dave's Place (the MRO hostel).
    Howard Davis, recent past Museum Manager, arrived late the same day;
next morning, we had a wild blueberry-pancake breakfast at Cowboys !
Then we drove up the 2 highest mountains in Virginia, White Top
and Mount Rogers ( on which we parked and walked up to see the ponies
near Rhododendron Gap ) ! Next day we went over to the Mount Rogers
Headquarters/Museum Building, and looked at all the exhibits there.
Then walked down to the nearby Partnership Shelter to check it out
and its hot-water shower ! I told Howard about May of 1997, when
a group of us (Nimblewill Nomad, Pirate, Teaberry & Double Cup, and
myself were there when the hot-water was first turned on !
It was the first shelter with a hot-water shower inside ! Nimblewill
put that event and our names in his book 10 Million Steps .
Unfortunately, Howard suddenly had to return home the next day,
Thursday, to be there for his wife who was ill .

Thursday, the A. T. Museum table was moved out of the ALDHA tent !
ALDHA didn't have the usual adequate table display space to accommodate
our A. T. Museum display (it had been created months before Trail Days).
So, it was set up in the same room at the One Way Ministries Church in which
we also display our AT Traveling Exhibit. The location, directly across
the road from the main entrance to the hiker's campground,
saw a lot of traffic every day from 8 AM until 10 PM., since the church serves
many free meals to the hikers, maintains a coffee house in part of the
building every day for the hikers with free coffee, lemonade, snacks,
sandwiches, cheese nachos, as well as meals ! Additionally, each night
they have a live band that plays until 10 PM. The extended time for viewing
our A. T. Museum display saw many interested hikers come through
and ask questions about the Museum. I gave out all of the new
    A. T. Museum decal stickers I had brought along from home !
In total, the new location is an improvement !

"On behalf of the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club, Chris and I
would like to ask for your support with a very important project.
The Club is undertaking a fundraising effort to create

In other words we are finally going to install flush toilets!
In addition we are going to build a new pit toilet house for all
of our hikers to include heat and lights!

You know Blackburn and how important it has been for Chris and me.
We met there, married there, and for the past two years we have
even lived there. And while the project will most likely not be completed
this season I know that this upgrade will benefit visitors and

    consider making a donation today.
    You can donate online at:

Once the project is completed Chris and I will be hosting

Of course to fully appreciate these improvements
you are always welcomed to come and visit us under the current

Default Museum Activities Last Weekend ~ Report ! ~ Photos & More !

    MUSEUM ACTIVITIES LAST WEEKEND ! ~ 2016 AT H of F Banquet Program ~ 3 PHOTOS
    ~ Gwen's TV INTERVIEW ! ~ MUSEUM & PARK PROGRAMS ~ & MORE !

    Dear Appalachian Trail Museum Friends,

Here are a few of the many comments heard over last weekend's
activities ~ the AT Hall of Fame Banquet, the Saturday Children's Festival
& Exhibit Dedication, and the Sunday's Special Program:

Regarding the AT Hall of Fame Banquet:
Anonymous ~ It seems just like yesterday Jim you were sharing this brainstorm of yours,
and look how successful, meaningful, and well established it has become.
I saw how hard you and others were working last night--and I know much work
has taken place in the months preceding.

Jim Foster ~ It was a very successful evening.
We had a total of 99 attendees and/or tickets sold.
That's a new record, just edging out the first year, 2011.

Anon. ~ Kudos on a terrific effort that is such an important element of preserving
the Appalachian Trail's history and honoring those who have contributed so much
to making the A.T. the amazing phenomenon it has become.

Anon ~ The AT Hall of Fame Banquet has really become something
to look forward to. The AT Hall of Fame makes the history of the trail come alive !

Anon ~ Well done, Jim and the rest of the crew!
    A wonderful event, again !

    Regarding the entire weekend:
Anon ~ There were great vibes running through this joyful weekend.
The Museum, the Park, the County and all the volunteers have made it
such a positive place to be.

Anon ~ Larry, You are to blame for getting this crazy idea to fruition !

I want to pass along to you for review, the Banquet Program.
To view, click on: 2016 AT HALL OF FAME BANQUET PROGRAM

Throughout all the success our A. T. Museum enjoys, there remains that
one, solid AT element seen over and over ~ THE VOLUNTEER.
From all the volunteer docents who first greet visitors at the Museum door,
to the many "behind-the scene volunteers" whose myriad efforts, if written
on paper, would be way to long for this feeble email to contain. Then one
can not forget that host of financial volunteers whose contributions, not only
keep our doors open with coverage of daily operations, but continue to
make possible the expansion we are doing into the remainder of our building !
THANK YOU, volunteers, for our success. Your efforts were particularly
in full view last weekend -- our AT Hall of Fame Weekend !

Default Volunteers - Museum Expansion Report - Plaque Deadline Soon ! - Gatewood's PBS docum.

VOLUNTEERS APPRECIATED ! ~ TOUR OF EXPANSION WORK ! ~ BUILDING FUND PLAQUE DEADLINE SOON ! ~
~ GRANDMA GATEWOOD DOCUMENTARY ON PBS ~ & MORE !

Dear Appalachian Trail Museum Society Friends, "GREETINGS" !

I want to say a BIG "THANK YOU" to all our supporters for the success
we have with our Appalachian Trail Museum ~ the success in its day-to-day
operations, as well as the wonderful expansion taking place into the
remaining upper two levels of the "Old Mill" building.

HATS OFF TO OUR VOLUNTEERS !
"THANK YOU, VOLUNTEERS for your efforts"

~ they show in the number of the days and hours we are open, as well as in
the amount of 2016 visitors (6,222 as of July 31 and yet open until November) !

~ they show in the well-done completion of so many small but important tasks

like cutting the grass, cleaning, etc., etc.
NOTE: Joe can always use another volunteer --> [email protected]).

~ they show in the landscape, and in the construction to open the upper two levels

    for A. T. Museum usage.

"THANK YOU, FINANCIAL CONTRIBUTORS" for your generosity. It has made
and continues to make our Appalachian Trail Museum the success it is.
Note, December 31, this year 2016 is THE DEADLINE for contributions to give
you a listing or upgrade your listing on the new, permanent plaque ! It will be
hung in The Museum in June 2017 ~ for view there the Saturday after our annual
AT Hall of Fame Banquet ! More about the plaque and its present listings later.

FIRST, A RAMP TOUR ENDING IN THE UPPER TWO LEVELS OF THE MUSEUM !
We will tour the ramp construction, as it now is, and up into the upper two levels
to see some of the work done there. More on both the ramp and the upper levels
remains to be done, but we have come a long way!
A BIG "THANK YOU" to our volunteers and to you, our financial contributors
    ~ "MANY THANKS, INDEED" !

    TOUR OF CONSTRUCTION
~ UP RAMPS AND INTO THE UPPER TWO LEVELS BY SCRIPT AND PHOTOS !
Our tour begins with the VIEW OF RAMP TO UPPER LEVELS FROM ROAD.
Then we go to the deck outside the present main door to the incomplete beginning
of the RAMP CONSTRUCTION TO UPPER LEVELS~ the last section that remains
to be built ! We step through the prepared soil (the deck's extension to the ramps)
to where the COMPLETED RAMP BEGINS~ what fine, sturdy metal handrails
are on the ramps sides ! Then, its on up the ramp toward the RAMP SWITCH-BACK
~ this road-side view of the ramps shows a break in the rails for another entrance !
We get another ramp and building view GOING UP RAMP PAST SWITCH-BACK !
And arrive for the RAMP VIEW AT TOPwith the corner of the building on the left,
and below on right, the lower ramp, the road, and the A. T. Museum's sign !

Now inside we see the UPPER LEVEL INTERIOR ~ the wood ceiling installation,
and with insulation ! The sheet rock walls look good ~ the construction materials all
about shows the various, involved variety of jobs taking place here ! Then up to
the attic for more INTERIOR CONSTRUCTION~ Jeff Seal and the incomplete ceiling,
with insulation (to keep the heat and the cool in ~ building is climate controlled with
both heating and cooling already installed) ! Both focused on the ceiling installation,
we find JEFF SEAL (L) & RON BUNGAY AT WORK FOR THE MUSEUM! ~ TH END !

    BUILDING-FUND-PUSH-TO-THE-PLAQUE-DEADLINE CAMPAIGN !

Your A. T. Museum NEEDS YOUR FINANCIAL HELP to successfully complete
our building expansion and to outfit these additional two levels with success.

    Dear Appalachian Trail Museum Friends,

WITF's Smart Talk broadcast, produced August 8, which aiired on
Wednesday, features several A. T. Museum folk, among them are the
    A. T. Museum Manager Joe Harold, "Drag'N Fly", "Freckles", Andre Weltman, and others !

The Smart Talk program was produced at the General Store in

Pine Grove Furnace State Park, within sight of the Appalachian
Trail Museum, and actually on the AT ! This is the latest in the
Smart Talk Road series. This broadcast was hosted by Scott Lamar.

With Pine Grove Furnace at about the midpoint of the 2,200-mile AT,
much of the discussion focuses on hiking and hiking culture.
Two of the guests on the program –Nan “Drag’N Fly” Reisinger and
Carolyn “Freckles” Banjak – have hiked the entire length of the Trail
from Georgia to Maine, ending the hike at The A. T. Museum ! In fact
breaking the record, Nan "Drag’N Fly” Reisinger is the oldest woman
to ever through-hike the AT !

The show explores what the Appalachian Trail Museum has to offer.
Smart Talk also touches on topics such as conservation, the outdoors, state parks,
and history, including the history of the furnace that was used to make iron.

Appearing on Smart Talk are Cindy Dunn, Secretary of the Pennsylvania
Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.; Joe Harold, Manager
of the A. T. Museum; and Andre Weltman, President and Historian with
Friends of Pine Grove Furnace State Park.
