Default Happy Holiday! ~ Merry Christmas!

A little Christmas film-clip gift for your review !

Here is a film-clip which I think is appropriate for the Christmas season and for its' value as a slice of
the southern mountain cultural experience ~ that area through which much of our Appalachian Trail has
its' course. I hope that you will find it as enjoyable and fitting to the Christmas season as I have. Thanks
goes to Lucy Seeds, one of Grandma Gatewoods daughters for sending this clip to me to pass along.

The first attachment is a very short synopsis of who Tennessee "Ernie" Ford was.
The second attachment is the film-clip. NOTE : watch the little boy on his right, besides Tennessee Ernie's
    reactions to the child's actions ! ~ very laughable and heart-warming .

Our Building Donor Fund campaign has been extended ~ in order to be listed on the permanent plaque which will hang in the Museum, you must send us your donation before the end of this month ~ JAN. 31, 2012 .~ see the first attachment for a printable donation form. Default Museum Manager's recent letter

The Appalachian Trail Museum's Manager, Howard Davis, recently sent out a lettter to all requesting program ideas, program presenters, volunteers
of all kinds (especially docent volunteers to man the Museum's front desk ~ if we are able to get enough of them, then the A. T. Museum could
open earlier when the NOBO's are heading through). See the following revised letter:

    FROM: Howard Davis, Manager

    Greetings:

The 2012 museum hours are noon to 4:00PM on weekends from Saturday,
March 31 to Memorial Day; daily from noon to 4:00PM Memorial Day thru
Labor Day, and noon to 4:00PM weekends from Labor Day to Sunday,
November 4. Extended hours will be scheduled to accommodate group
tours and special events at the Park . . . of which there are many.

Most of the 2011 docent-greeters have indicated they will be returning
for this year, and that’s certainly great news. It would be well,
however, to expand the hours the museum is open, particularly in June
when the mainstream of NOBO’s pass through the area. That goal cannot
be achieved without an expanded base of dedicated docent/greeters. As
a result I am enlisting your support to recruit new docent/greeters.
Please, potential recruits contact me at: [email protected]
    or call me at 717/486-8126.

Spring cleaning to prepare for the March 31st opening is scheduled for
Saturday, March 24, 2012 and we can use all the help that we can
muster. Later there will be full details in March, but circle the date now.

There are numerous events and programs scheduled for the 2012 season
including the Sunday afternoon public educational programs. ATM
Program Committee Chair, Gwen Loose is calling all A.T. Museum
volunteers to help prepare our educational program schedule for 2012:
The program committee needs your help! In 2011, we offered 16 programs
that drew an attendance of 430 and covered topics from Eastern
Rattlesnakes to Appalachian folk music. This year we will offer free,
public programs each Sunday at 2 PM from Memorial Day weekend through
Labor Day weekend – a total of 15. We may also extend the program
calendar earlier into the spring or later into the fall.

If you share our commitment to educate the public about the A.T.---
its history, its flora & fauna, its hikers, its special places,
etc.--- contact committee chair Gwen Loose at [email protected]
or (717) 891-9967 or museum manager Howard Davis at:
[email protected] or phone: 717/486-8126 .
We’d love to talk to you!

    Thank you.

Also, we continue to seek your financial support ~either as an Appalachian Trail Museum member ($20 per year) or a donation of your choice.
Please see the attachment for a printable membership/donation form.

    Default A. T. Hall of Fame < < Deadline Soon > >

    A. T. Hall of Fame DEADLINE ~10-DAY COUNTDOWN ~Feb. 29 !

Nominees for the Appalachian Trail Hall of Fame will be accepted through Wednesday, February 29, 2012,
to recognize those who have made a significant contribution toward establishing and maintaining the
2,181 mile footpath that passes through 14 states from Maine to Georgia.

"Last year was the inaugural year for the Appalachian Trail Hall of Fame, and it became
an instant hit with those who hike and appreciate the magnificent resource that we have
in the Appalachian Trail," said Larry Luxenberg, president of the Appalachian Trail Museum Society
    – the organization that oversees the Appalachian Trail Hall of Fame. "The induction of the first class
    – Myron Avery, Gene Espy, Ed Garvey, Benton MacKaye, Arthur Perkins and Earl Shaffer – set the
bar high for future inductees, but that is the character of those who will be inducted. All of last year’s
inductees were pioneers in envisioning, planning, building and or thru-hiking the trail. The Hall of Fame
recognizes those people who have unselfishly devoted their time, energy and resources toward
making the Appalachian Trail a national treasure."

Nomination criteria and the nominating and selection processes for the 2012 Hall of Fame are:

Criteria - Those eligible for inclusion include anyone who has made an exceptional and positive
contribution to the Appalachian Trail or Appalachian Trail community. This could be by leadership,
inspiration, service, achievement or innovation. This includes, without limitation, pioneers who conceived
of and developed the trail; those who organized or directed major trail organizations like the Appalachian
Trail Conservancy and Appalachian Trail clubs; maintaining clubs; longtime trail maintainers; leaders
who promoted and protected the A.T.; hikers who have made significant accomplishments, and other
persons who have enriched the culture or community of the Appalachian Trail by their association with it.
Eligible persons can be living or deceased. The emphasis will be on persons who have made their
contribution to the A.T. over a long period, whether or not they are still active. Six individuals were elected
in the first year. The sizes of the succeeding classes will be gradually reduced to create the maximum
degree of honor and exclusivity. The first few classes will be comprised primarily of important historical
figures (living or deceased) rather than contemporary figures. Eligibility and selection will be determined
without regard to race, creed, color, gender, sexual orientation, or national origin.

Nominations – Nominations will be solicited from throughout the hiking and trails community, by using
this online site http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/KGCPCBW. A nominator need not be a member of
any hiking organization to submit a nomination. A nominator may only make one nomination per election
cycle. Nominators will be asked to justify their nomination in a brief statement not exceeding 200 words
that describes the nominee and why he or she fits the criteria.

Announcement and recognition of inductees – Appalachian Trail Hall of Fame inductees will be
announced on Friday, June 8, 2012, at the Appalachian Trail Hall of Fame Banquet at the Allenberry Resort
in Boiling Springs, Pennsylvania. The inductees will be enshrined on an Appalachian Trail Hall of Fame
Wall of Honor to be located in the Appalachian Trail Museum.

Come to the second annual Appalchian Trail Hall of Fame Banquet !
Friday, June 8, 2012, Allenberry Resort, Boiling Springs, PA
Banquet details to be annouced soon.

Default Recent news article ~ John "Bodacious" Beaudet's carved walking sticks

CARVED WALKING STICKS DONATED FOR A. T. HALL OF FAME BANQUET

I thought I'd pass the attached article that was recently printed in the news media ~FYI

At last year's banquet and again at this year's, carved wooden walking sticks are given to
the inductees. John "Bodacious" Beaudet of Flag Pond, TN hunts out the wood in the areas
forests (sourwood, prefered) to carve into substancial, workable, and excellently ornate
walking sticks and then donates them to our Appalachian Trail Museum for their use as a
physical award presented to the year's inductees ! The first thumbnail (the Hall of Fame
poster) has Eugene Espy, the 2nd. thru-hiker, holding his "Bodacious"-made stick. The 3nd.
attachment is the recent article about this hiker, woodsman, and craftsman, "Bodacious".

I remember after the ALDHA Gathering in 2010, John and I traveled around the mts. over east
from Erwin, TN. in his pickup, scouring the back-woods roads around Unaka Mt. and Beauty
Spot for "just the right" sourwoods to supply some good walking sticks. It was one of those
pleasant , sunny, cool autumn days.

Enjoy the article. NOTE: The 2rd. thumbnail is a printable member/donor form which
I hope you'll put to use and help us preserve our A. T. history.
