When I glanced at the museum photos my first impression was that it could be any building. It lacked uniqueness that set it apart from other building, so I took the liberty and came up with a five quick suggestions to give the exterior an attitude, or a heartbeat if you will. Some suggestions are inexpensive, and some can be paid and sponsored by companies of products that hikers support. (quid pro quo). The picture I envisioned is larger than life and has a touch of surrealism to it.

    1. Plant large areas with endemic white/blue flowers to represent different colored blazes with rigid dimensions.
    2. Plant a large area with white flowered plants that represent the AT logo
    3. An interactive maze of plants can be grown that leads inwards towards a communal space that contains a fire pit/logs
    4. Very large trekking poles/hiking boots (scaled up and sculptured replicas) can be placed at designated spots around the building to be seen from a distance and give the building an immediate identity. The funding for the casting and manufacture can be obtained from outdoor companies.
    5. Flagpoles with AT branded flags

    Dear TTT, HELLO !

I'm sorry that the over 200-year-old Museum building does not seem to be unique from other buildings to you.
Your suggestions are well thought out, and would have an interest. I might say that our exterior appearance
continues to evolve as we have Penn. State Park approved designs ~ we are in a Penn. State Park and they tightly
control what may be built or placed in the exterior property of the building. They must approve all interior and exterior
changes, since it is a historic structure.

That said, I would suggest that you contact the A. T. Museum Manager, Nathaniel Shank, with your suggestions.
You might shade & copy your Whiteblaze script and this reply to put him on the same page with you.
    His email is <[email protected]>

I am the Museum Membership Secretary and do not manage any other A. T. Museum activities, although I do
publicize much of the Museum's activites, as well as that of many other hiker-community organizations.

    Sincerely,

Robert Croyle aka "RED WOLF o'da SMOKY'S"

The building itself is awesome! It was just food for thought to scramble the creative juices. I may look at a 100 year old man and not tell his occupation, but if he had a stethoscope around his neck and was wearing a white coat I might have a better idea. As a heritage building that is bound by regulations, I don't see the garden falling into this niche.

Thumbs up for all the hard work
    Rob

BOARD MEETING ~ NEW CAMPAIGN ! ~ TICKETS FOR AT HALL OF FAME BANQUET ~
    ~ A. T. MUSEUM FESTIVAL JUNE 3 ~ MAINE CHAPTER IAT ~ & MORE !

    Dear Appalachian Trail Museum Friends,

Last Sunday April 2nd., the A. T. Museum Society Board met
for the annual board meeting at The Museum's 3rd floor level
(only the second time we've had the meeting in our building)!
A sizable group of board members actually used the new ramp
to enter at, what will be the new "Main Entrance"! ~ many
did this for the first time through that door ! All in all, we had
a constructive session, with many reports from the various
board members about their efforts for our A. T. Museum.
The amount of volunteered work covered this past year by your
board is well reflected in the excellent state of professional
appearance of our Appalachian Trail Museum; and yet, we all
give the credit to the vital volunteer work, financial contributions,
and support from each of you, our A. T. Museum Friends.
    Thank you .

Check out an A. T. Museum photo full of activities last June, click on:

    NEW BUILDING FUND CAMPAIGN (2017-2021):
~ GET YOUR A. T. MUSEUM SOCIETY MEMBERSHIP
~ BE LISTED ON A PERMANENT MUSEUM PLAQUE
    ~ CONTRIBUTE & HELP OUR A. T. MUSEUM
    The A. T. Museum is a 501(c)(3) non-profit that depends on
volunteer contributions and memberships. Any contribution is
greatly appreciated and is tax deductible under applicable law.

The Museum has launched a new, five year campaign to raise
the funds to finish all renovation work on the "Old Mill" building,
and to cover the expense of outfitting the upper levels
    ~ the expense of new exhibits (not inexpensive);

    electronic equipment for the docents; furniture of all sorts;
office supplies; maintenance equipment; everything to complete
    our A. T. Museum as a "TOP-NOTCH" Museum.

Open for over seven years, The Museum has never charged any
admission fee! Like our Appalachian Trail, we depend on our many,
generous volunteers for their efforts, financial contributions,
    and their support.

This "Building Fund Campaign" (with its A. T. Museum permanent
plaque) will run through 2021, and aims to raise over $350,000.
The last campaign had a goal of $150,000, but because of your
generous support, it raised over $270,000 !

All donors of $50 or more will be listed on a new plaque to be hung
permanently in The Museum in June 2022. The TOTAL of a donor's
contributions over the entire period (2017 - 2021) will determine
the donor's listing level on this new plaque. Every donation of $20 or
more will receive a one-year A. T. Museum Society membership,
an IRS receipt, an acknowledgement note detailing the donor's
current listing level on the new plaque, and a membership card.
FOR A SHORT TIME, all donors of $250 or more will receive a
    "NO EXPIRATION" membership.
Additionally, all donors of $1,000 or more will be listed in the June
    A. T. Hall of Fame Banquet Program !

    Thank you .

    ~ the expense of new exhibits (not inexpensive);

    electronic equipment for the docents; furniture of all sorts;
office supplies; maintenance equipment; everything to complete
    our A.

MUSEUM UPDATES ~ Entrance Walk Relaid ~ NEW CAMPAIGN (2017-2021) ! ~ TICKETS (AT of F Banquet) ~
    ~ AT FESTIVAL JUNE 3rd. ! ~ EARTH DAY APRIL 22 ACTIVITIES (LOTS !) ~ & MORE

    Dear Appalachian Trail Museum Friends,

March has turned into April and things are happening !
The activity level at The Museum is steadily on the increase
as that of the State Park and the AT increase.

Boy Scouts Troop #430 from Delaware County, Pennsylvania,
removed the entire brick walk leading up to the Museum from
the info kiosk, then relaid it level on the weekend of the board
meeting (April 1-2)! They relaid it so as to more align with
the beginning of the ramp to the upper level. The walkway had
become very uneven and falling in some areas.

The group Friends of Pine Grove Furnace State Park provided
    funds for the materials.

I was amazed at the high-energy level of work they did,
oblivious to the cold temperature, especially on that Saturday,
April 1, when it was a chilly low-40's-day with a constant, chilly
wind. The volunteer docents, Nate the Museum Manager,
and myself remained mostly within the warm protection of
those thick, stone Museum walls, with only short visits outside
to "see how the work was coming along" ! Those boy scouts
were a marvel to watch in action ~ what a work-gang, indeed!
They finished most of it that same day, and only returned
on Sunday for a little "dressing-up" of a few difficult spots.
More about them and their excellent volunteer effort soon.
In this photo you can see the brick walk leading from the
info kiosk toward The Museum ~ they took up and RE-LAID the
entire walk, replacing degraded wood as they ran into it, in
less than two days ! ~ To Troop # 430, MANY THANKS .

Here is a photo of this brick walk before it was relaid, click on,

The Maine Chapter of the IAT wishes you "Happy Earth Day"
last Saturday, and thanks everyone who has been involved
with the IAT. Last Saturday, April 22nd. we celebrated
23 years of successfully moving ahead on the idea of
"thinking beyond borders" and expanding and improving the
    INTERNATIONAL APPALACHIAN TRAIL, click on,
    INTERNATIONAL APPALACHIAN TRAIL
    Thank you for your support.

The vision to build a hiking trail through the northern Appalachian
Mountains was proposed at a news conference on Earth Day,
April 22, 1994, in Portland, Maine, by former Maine Governor
Joseph E. Brennan and Maine conservationists Dick Anderson,
Don Hudson, Cloe Chunn and Dick Davies. It was designed as a
project that would give Mainers an opportunity to work with and
get to know their Canadian neighbors by using the geology of
the landscape as a guide to link us together with a narrow
walking path. The plan was to work with New Brunswick and
Quebec to develop a hiking trail that followed the Appalachian
Mountains, from Maine's Katahdin to Mount Carlton in New Brunswick
and then on to Mont Jacques Cartier in Quebec's Gaspé Peninsular.

Look at us now! Thank you for your support over the past 23 years.
We hope for your continued support and invite you to join us as
