    SOME SELECT MOUNTAIN MUSIC :

The music played in the southern Appalachians for the past 200

or more years has been the basis for modern "bluegrass music".
I spent time around Damascus, Virginia in 1997 and on several nights
in each week we would take in " impromptu gatherings of local musicians"
at either town stores, community centers, even at a one engine firehouse !
Now, when I make it up to those mountains, I like to take in the local
musical gatherings, wherever I may find them ~ often, the music played
in these small events is really quite good indeed !
So, I want to pass along the following professional musical program which
was performed in my hometown Savannah, Georgia at our annual
Savannah Music Festival, click on: The Earls of Leicester

The holidays are upon us ! With a "polar vortex" bearing
down, even all the way down here to Savannah, it's beginning
to feel like the season. With all the decorations around and up,
it even looks like it ! ~ HAPPY HOLIDAYS !

We continue mentioning the upcoming DEC. 31 DEADLINE for
every one's plaque contributions. All will count toward our current
Appalachian Trail Museum Building Fund Campaign. Don't miss
your opportunity to have a listing on the campaign's permanent plaque
which will be hung in The Museum next June 3rd., the Saturday
after it is on display at the A. T. Hall of Fame Banquet June 2nd. !
The over $227,000 raised by this campaign has funded not only
daily operations since 2012, but will allow us to continue expansion
and the outfitting of the upper two floors of our "Old Mill" building.
We still must wok at fund-raising since the outfitting of these
two floors will be expensive to do as professionally as possible.
We want our A. T. Museum to be top notch ! And it should be,
since it is "The Museum" of "The Premiere National Scenic Trail
~ the Appalachian Trail". "Thank you for your support, not only
is it vital, but know it is appreciated and well used".
~ see last paragraphs of this "Museum Update" for donation info.

Joe Harold is ending his last month as our Museum Manager,
and we have been trying to give him work filling orders from
the Museum's online store. He recently emailed, "We have had over
4,000 visits to the store in the last 7 days and I have sold some
items, including some Earl Shaffer Foundation stuff. I just put our
two books on sale for 10% off!"
~ ~ therefore, to try and keep him busy filling orders, and since
that can only be done with your help, here are some direct links to

gifts for those you know or for your own use:

~ ~ therefore, to try and keep him busy filling orders, and since
that can only be done with your help, here are some direct links to
groups of items of which you might wish to choose and purchase
gifts for those you know or for your own use:

    Dear Appalachian Trail Museum Friends,

Since many of our friends are Canadian and we support their
International Appalachian Trail (www.iat-sia.com) efforts, I came across
a Canadian subject that apparently is well-known in Canada, but
of whom few here in the USA know; and I thought that here at
the Holidays it would be appropriate to share. I offer this as
a cultural subject for whatever it may be worth to my readers.
    MERRY CHRISTMAS !
Here is a holiday gift to you, a series of links,
which I hope you may enjoy:
    ~ THE HURON CAROL
All deal with the first North American Christmas Carol,
written in 1642 by Father Saint John de Brébeuf SJ
for his missionary work with the native american tribe
of the "Wyanbottes", known to the French as "The Huron".
They occupied the now Canadian province of Ontario.

The first link is my favorite, with the aurora borealis pics,
the native american drumming, and the lyrics.
BE SURE TO CLICK ON THE FULL SCREEN ICON (lower right).
    HURON CAROL

The next link is the lyrics of all four verses written out
with only instrumental music. No need to click on the
updated offering since the link as is is the best version.
THE HURON CAROL - LYRICS OF ALL VERSES

This next link to The Huron Carol contains a video of what it may
have been like at Father Brébeuf's mission with the arrival of
    the Wyanbottes for services.
Again, be sure to click on "FULL SCREEN".
HURON CAROL ~ NATIVE AMERICAN VIDEO

And lastly, a video (long) of the "Story of The Huron Carol",
which seems to have a volume problem, but some great video
all in native attire ! Again, Click on "FULL SCREEN":

    Dear Appalachian Trail Museum Friends,

    WINTER SNOWMAN AT 5,300 FEET

One surprise fact about the A. T. Museum is how much it has become
an "oasis-for-hikers" ~ they are ALWAYS WELCOME & there is NEVER AN ADMITTANCE FEE.
In fact, The Museum has a sitting area for thru-hikers who may want to stop and take a break.
They are really celebrities to all of us at The Museum, and especially for
the state park visitors who may happen to have stopped in also !

Here is some feedback I have received lately:
~ Just wanted to pass along how impressed I am at the progress made on the museum.
I passed through Pine Grove Furnace in May 2013 - I cannot believe how far things have come since then.
Glad I have been able to donate to help the museum and to see the funds put to such great work.

So, Museum Supporters, we hope we continue to support the entire hiking community ~ a major
emphasis of our mission statement. And that you are pleased with how we are spending your
most generous financial support in our operations and in our continued expansion ?
Your support is vital, it is an encouragement to all us volunteers, it funds our daily operations and
the expansion into the entire "Old Mill" building, and it is appreciated ~ THANK YOU .

    HAPPY TRAILS ! ~ RED WOLF o'da SMOKY'S

    Dear Appalachian Trail Museum Friends,

    MID-POINT VIEW OF TOP DECK & RAMP'S BOTTOM !

    I imagine these ramps will see a LOT OF TRAFFIC in 2017;

the tremendous amount work involved in the outfitting of the expanded areas
will keep these ramps and the inside small stairs very busy INDEED !

    ~ 2017 READY ACCESS TO THE UPPER 2 FLOORS ! ~ VERY EXCITING !

Your support has not only funded the daily operation expenses, but also has allowed
the tremendous expansion we now begin to actually see !
JUST IMAGINE THIS HARD FACT ~ Your financial support, to-date, to our current
Building Fund Campaign has brought in a TOTAL IN EXCESS OF $259,600 !
All these funds are carefully put to wise, "Brick-'N-Mortar" use by our volunteers.
