APPALACHIAN TRAIL MUSEUM ~ RENOVATION PROGRESS ! ~ MUSEUM & PARK PROGRAMS ~
~ "TRAIL MAGIC" SATELLITE FEED SEPT 10 ~ OPERATION HOURS CHANGE & MORE !

~ view of The Museum from the information kiosk

    Dear Appalachian Trail Museum Friends,

    RENOVATION PROGRESS :
Joe Harold, Museum Manager, recently wrote in his report
    to the Museum Volunteers,
" The Museum continues to transform into a larger exhibit space
with the help of our wonderful volunteers. Jack Adams leads the crew
that is building the ramp to the second floor and Ron Bungay leads
the two upper floors work. Howard Davis has also been doing a lot
of tree planting with the help of Jay Sexton and Dan Taylor.

Jack's team consists of Al Black, Chuck Strehl, Ed Riggs, and
Howard Davis. Ron's team is made up of Carol Bungay, Jeff Seal,
Margy Schmidt, Randy Fishback, and Mike Wingeart.

The ramp is nearing completion and the upper two stories are
transforming each week. Soon we will start the planning of the
new exhibits for the second floor, and start moving all the books
and other resource items to the top floor library !

We couldn't do it without the help of these great volunteers.
    Our thanks is huge. "

Likewise, our A. T. Museum and its expansion into the entire
"Old Mill" building are not possible without your financial support.

$50 & up contributors is to hang June 2017 in The Museum, continues

AT AUTUMN COLORS ~ THE MUSEUM AT THE GATHERING ~
~ MUSEUM END OF SEASON HOURS ~ NATIONAL PUBLIC LANDS DAY & MORE !

    Dear Appalachian Trail Museum Friends,

Now as we are going into the last 10 days of September,
even here along the south Georgia coast, this morning has
a taste of autumn in the 71 degree air ( the coolest since last spring) !
In only two weeks, I will go up to "THE GATHERING", that annual
fall hiker-reunion, which this year we will all get-together at
Williams College in northwestern Massachusetts, at Williamstown .
Some of us from the Appalachian Trail Museum, will once again have
an A. T. Museum info table and now even sell some merchandise.
I hope to see many of you Museum friends there and say "HELLO" !

At the first Gathering I attended in 2001 at Dartmouth College,
in Hanover, NH, myself and all of us for the first time heard
Walkin' Jim Stoltz sing a song he created for ALDHA's Gathering,
which we have adopted and sing at every Gathering, click on:
"TO THE GATHERING AGAIN"by Walkin' Jim Stoltz, 2001.

F.Y.I. ~ to register and for more info, click on:
    http://www.aldha.org/gathering.html

Needless to say, the New England landscape will once again "be painted
by Ma Nature" and wear its "coat of many colors".......
    -- AUTUMN LEAVES !
Here are a few links to some pics of autumns past along the AT
from Erwin, TN south to the Smokey's. Be sure to click on the "+"
tab which appears in the bottom left margin of each pic to
enlarge "to-the-max" for the best, detailed view of each
(colors really become outstanding if you do that enlarging) !
First, we'll start NEAR SAM'S GAP (ERWIN, TN)

Then we move ALONG THE AT IN TENN / NC

Next we pass AUTUMN-COLORED MAPLES (TENN / NC)

And finally, we see FALL IN THE SMOKY MOUNTAINS

    Dear Appalachian Trail Museum Friends,

This is the time of year that I love to be walking that open ridge
north of Roan Mountain. The nights are chilly ~ a fire feels good
~ and the warm tent and bed even better up there along
that ridge-top ! A front may come through and dust everything with
some white, but in the morning, the clarity gives the ultimate
"photo-opportunity" , with view north and south of open ridge, sky,
and waves of mountain ridges off to the horizon.

JENS KRUGER INTERVIEW & PARKING INFO :

Here is a letter from Judy Murray, wife of Stan Murray,
regarding this Saturday's "Premiere Performance" of
the Roan Mountain Suite composed in memory of Stan Murray,
protector of the Roan Highlands and long-time ATC Chair.

    Friends,
If you haven't decided yet whether to attend this Saturday's
Roan Mountain Suite World Premiere, then this
Bristol Herald Courier Features article might help you to decide:

A PREVIEW FROM THE BRISTOL HERALD COURIER

Coming or not, you'll enjoy the article.
Actually it's the Kontras Quartet, not the Kronos Quartet!
    But they're great too.

    Parking
If you are coming to the concert, be aware that Bristol does not
have any large downtown parking lots. They have street parking
and a few small lots, so allow ample time to find a space and
    get to the theater beforehand.
Doors open at 6:30. Concert begins at 7:30

From this link, you can download and print a map that indicates
street parking in orange and lot parking in blue.
The Paramount is #10 on the map. I would recommend nearby
street parking or the blue lot on 5th Street as first choices.

    BRISTOL PARKING MAP

    Hope to see you there!

    All the best,

    Judy Murray

Thanks, as always, for the colorful updates, Red Wolf!

I was wondering if you folks had a 'wanted' list? I'd hate to send you your fifth copies of the Hale books for instance - but would love to donate your first.

On Sunday we will meet at 10:00am
at the small parking lot on the Old Railroad Bed, 1.5 miles
from the beginning of the road. The parking area is at an old
Forest road gate, 9/10ths of a mile past the Pole Steeple trail
parking lot -- look for parked cars and a wide new "trail" into
the woods on the right, marked with orange tape.
    Bring work gloves.

SEE YOU IN THE MORNING ?

    Thank you !
FOPGF (Friends of Pine Grove Furnace)
