Thumbs up A tour of the A. T. Museum (short video) ~ and other various links

VIDEO TOUR OF THE A. T. MUSEUM & OTHER LINKS !

    Dear Appalachian Trail Museum Friends,

Larry Luxenberg, A. T. Museum President, just sent a link to

one AT hiker's video of the Museum's interior. Since only one floor is
    open, it tours only that floor. In 2015, the lower floor will also be open;
last November, the Cumberland Area Economic Development Corporation
awarded the Appalachian Trail Museum Society an $18,000 grant to
"retrofit basement of A. T. Museum for museum use and create and install
displays for youth activities" Generous contributions have made construction
of the ramps to the upper two floors of our Museum building possible. ~ the added
benefits of all the floors being outfitted and opened will be a BIG PLUS for
the entire Appalachian Trail community (increased room for visitors, more exhibits,
artifact storage, operational maintenance areas, research capabilities,....and more) !
As you watch the following video, please consider your financial support for
our Appalachian Trail Museum ~ it is NEEDED :
    MAIN FLOOR VIDEO

For a convenient, printable contribution-membership form, see the "FORM" attachment.

NOTE: All of an individual's contributions until December 2016 will be added together
to give his "TOTAL DONATIONS" amount, which will determine that individual's
listing level on the new, June 2017, "Building Fund Donors" plaque.

If you have already contributed, you have received an acknowledgement note,
an I.R.S. receipt suitable for tax purposes, and membership card ($20 or more donation).
MANY THANKS for your contribution. Your support is appreciated.

I used it in the past on my own land-line.
You must call from the cell or land-line number you want blocked.
You cannot call from a different phone number.

Cool A. T. Museum's Opening Day Report ~ April & May Park Programs

REPORT ON MUSEUM'S OPENING DAY (with photos !)
    ~ APRIL/MAY PARK PROGRAMS

    Dear Appalachian Trail Museum Friends,

Our A. T. Museum opened last Saturday, March 28, for its 6th. season !
It seems like time has really flown since a group of "AT Hikers" were
sitting around year after year from 1998 until we finally first opened
in 2010 ~ And NOW, we see beginning our SIXTH SEASON ! WOW !
Many thanks to so many, many supporters ~ you are appreciated as
we all strive to preserve our AT history.

Joe "EarthTone" Harold, Museum Manager, was prevailed upon to write
up a little something for us about Opening Day:

" AS I headed up the highway, then the secondary road, then the PA Country road,
the flakes swirled past my windshield in their quest to find a resting place.
March 28th, Spring has sprung ! Opening day at the A. T. Museum and snow was still in the air !

My temperature gauge said 26 degrees as I pulled into the parking spot at The Museum.
I grabbed my gear and quickly went inside. The first order of business was to conduct
an orientation session for some of the returning Docents. We had 13 experienced greeters huddling
around the electric heaters as I went through the processes of greeting our visitors, pointed out some
new functions, and gave some training on our Credit Card program.

Before long, it was time to open and our first visitor entered The Museum just after noon.
She was a Hiker from 2000 by the name of "Princess", and we awarded her a Halfway patch for being
our first "official" visitor of the 2015 season. As the day went by, we had more and more visitors who
came into The Museum to get out of the biting wind, including a large group of Boy Scout Section Hikers,
and our first Thru-Hiker for the season ! Close to 40 people came through The Museum on Opening Day !
Not too bad, considering the weather.

Normitz/Dragon Breath started the trail on January 1st.
He had a sad tail to tell, which I'll expand on
another day, but suffice it to say, the trail is his home for now.
His gear and clothes may not be perfect,
but it got him halfway done; he continues down the trail as best he can.
He actually hiked by the day before and backtracked to come to the opening day.
He brought an artifact to donate. To some, it would look like a rusted,
diamond-shaped piece of metal with bullet holes in it, but to us, at The Museum,
it is one of the ORIGINAL BLAZES that were used long ago
to mark trail ! He had found it barely hanging on a tree along
the trail in Virginia, and had thought to bring it to us.

If you see Normitz/Dragons Breath along the trail, try
to give him some magic to keep him going.
Every little bit counts and his journey is an important one.

As our first day finished, the temperature is still below freezing,
but it had been a good day at Our Museum.
    Tomorrow, would be another day.

Default Dave Patrick "Damascus Dave" passes ...........................................

    Dear Appalachian Trail Museum Friends,

It is with much regret and sadness that I have to post the following:

    F. Y. I. ~ Dave Patrick, our special Damascus "friend-to-all-hikers" passed away suddenly May 1.
He was one of the very first big supporters of our A. T. Museum. Once, in the very early
days of raising memberships and funds, he even set up a tent canopy just for the Museum to do
membership work under for the Trail Days Festival ! Personally, I have lost a dear friend.
All of us in the hiker-community will miss "Damascus Dave" and his sage hiker advice.

    "HAPPY TRAILS, my good friend."

Thumbs up Trail Days ~ 2017 Plaque Listings Posters ~ Banquet Tickets Reminder

    Dear Appalachian Trail Museum Friends,

I had a change of plans and came straight on up here
to Damascus, Virginia for the Trail Days Festival !

The Appalachian Trail Days Festival began Saturday with a
town-wide yard sale ~ in fact, tables were set up as far as Food City
over a half mile from the main business street, Laurel Avenue !

I posted the "latest revision" of the June 2017 plaque, which has
all the contributor listings at the various levels to our current
fund raising campaign ~ the "BUILDING FUND DONORS (2013 - 2016)
in the windows of Mount Rogers Outfitters ~ later in the upcoming week,
probably Thursday, I will move it to our A. T. Museum table in the
ALDHA tent, since we will be there "manning' that table.
This plaque will have a permanent spot in the A. T. Museum June 2017.
These posters will be updated and on display at the AT Hall of Fame Banquet
in June, at The Museum all summer, and then again at this coming October's
ALDHA Gathering in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania !

Usually, I have a very early (as soon as they open) breakfast at the ever
popular "COWBOY'S MINUTE MART". I was pleasantly surprised Saturday morning
as the recent past ATC Director Dave Starzell and recent past ATC Board Member
Steve Paradis came in (WITH PACKS ! ) and sat at the next table. I didn't recognize
Dave "Ghoust" Starzell until he came over to shake hands ~ his beard was DOUBLE
the length I remember ! Steve also came over to chat. They were both heading out
north on the AT ~ it was their first day out on a section hike from Damascus up
to Shenandoah ! Dave did from Springer to Damascus last year.
    "HAPPY TRAILS, you guys".

I'll display the Museum's Traveling AT Exhibit near the campground
at the One Way Ministries building (directly across from the hiker campground).

FYI ~ more Trail Days info, click on:2015 TRAIL DAYS

It is with regret and sadness that i must post the following information:
    F. Y. I. ~ Dave Patrick, our special Damascus "friend-to-all-hikers" passed away suddenly
at breakfast in his cabin on Whitetop Mountain (Virginia's 2nd. highest) the morning of Friday, May 1.
He was one of the first big supporters of our Appalachian Trail Museum. Once, in the very early days of
membership work and fundraising, he even had a canopy set up along the side of his outfitter store the
week of Trail Days for The Museum's campaign efforts ! Personally, I have lost a good friend.
All of us in the hiker-community will miss "Damascus Dave" Patrick of MRO (Mt. Rogers Outfitters), and
his sage hiker advice. His son, Jeff Patrick, will continue the outfitter business operation, as he has done
for the past few years since Dave, more or less, retired to enjoy his beloved Whitetop Mt. cabin.

" HAPPY TRAILS, my friend. "
