    2014 GATHERING ~ A. T. MUSEUM REPORT

The ALDHA Campground, on the hillside about 4 miles southwest of Wiliamstown, Mass,
having an excellent view over east of the mass of Mt. Greylock, decked out with the finest colors of the New England autumn, was packed full of tents ! We enjoyed three sunny, clear, no-rain days. It was in the 30's at night, which made the campfire-circle well attended by an appreciative crowd of campers. With days in the 50's, a finer location, weather, and hiker crowd would be hard to find !

The facilities of Williams College were top notch, as was the ALDHA program.

The Appalachian Trail Museum had to add another table to the two pre-ordered ones to have the room for the wonderful amount of donated articles to the "Silent Auction" fundraiser. Almost all were sold, so Joe Harold, Museum Manager, had very few to have to pack for the return to The Museum.

To everyone who donated articles ~ "MANY THANKS" ! Your support made the Silent Auction a success.

Both the sale of the two, Museum-published books ("Thru-" & "A Grip on the Mane of Life") and the membership / donation efforts also enjoyed success.
"THANK YOU" for your support ~ it is appreciated.

All together, The Museum raised over $700 in needed renovation building funds ! Our progress with the "Old Mill" renovation continues; in fact, this Wednesday, the concrete floor of the lowest level of the building is to be poured. Hopefully, we will see it open with more exhibit space in 2015 !

Red Wolf, we had a great time at the museum. The lady [I forgot her name] was very pleasant and helpful. The display is very nice as well as the mill.
I bought the book Thru, almost done with it already.

The lady in the camp store [also forgot her name too, she always wears shorts] had some great stories to tell.

someday I hope t pass thru, when I am hiking the trail

74 YEAR-OLD COMPLETES AT HIKE AT GATE NEAR OUR MUSEUM !

    Dear Appalachian Trail Museum Friends,

I want to pass along to you the following:
"GARDNERS -- Many women hike the entire length of the Appalachian Trail in the same year.
But none have the vintage of Nan "Drag'n Fly" Reisinger of Camp Hill (Penn.). She finished
    the hike
from Georgia to Maine on Sunday at the age of 74, the oldest woman ever to do so.
She completed her hike at the gate below The Museum ! She saved the short section
in Pine Grove Furnace for the grand finish that occurred Sunday (Oct 19)."

2014 MUSEUM SEASON ENDS AT 4PM TODAY, NOV. 2 !

    Dear Appalachian Trail Museum Friends.

Another successful A. T. Museum season in the "Old Mill' building

at Pine Grove Furnace State Park, Penn., ended Sunday, November 2 !

Our new manager, Joe Harold and his crew of volunteer docents, have

given their best professional efforts so that all visitors have a quality experience.
Not only are volunteers our Museum's "FRONT DESK", but volunteers do all the
day-to-day maintenance required in a large, historic structure, and are
involved with the expansion construction taking place constantly !

Our volunteers and Joe Harold, Museum Manager, deserve the thanks of all
Appalachian Trail Museum Friends for the outstanding professional job
they have done since the Museum's opening last March. ~ "Thank you" .

As the Museum Membership Secretary, I want to thank, not only our volunteers,
but also all our contributors who have and continue to support our Museum
with their financial contributions ~ they are vital to our success. Each year I see
the amount of donations increase, and this past year has not been an exception !
In fact, the total financial contributions made to the A. T. Museum's Building Fund
this past year is the highest yet !
"Many thanks, indeed, they are well-needed for our continued expansion
into the remainder of the Old Mill ".

The BUILDING FUND CAMPAIGN (2013 - 2016) continues; total now over $118,000.
RENEW YOUR MEMBERSHIP OR JOIN NOW for the 2015 A. T. Museum season
or consider making a donation ~ all donations are appreciated.
Every contribution counts toward the individual's listing level on a new plaque,
the "Building Fund (2013 - 2016) Campaign" plaque. It is to hang in The Museum
by June 2017, in time for the 2017 AT Hall of Fame Banquet !
ALL donations of $20 or more receive a 2014 membership in the A. T. Museum Society
which administers the federally registered non-profit Appalachian Trail Museum, Inc.
~ for a printable member / donor form, see the attachment "FORM (2013-2016)"

    Thumbs up President's 2014 A. T. Museum Progress Report

    PRESIDENT'S 2014 A. T. MUSEUM PROGRESS REPORT

    Dear Appalachian Trail Museum Friends,

Thank you for your support this past season for
our Appalachian Trail Museum. Our Museum has,
once again, been an ever-increasing success !
    Your efforts are appreciated .

Sunday evening, November 16, I attended our
Volunteer Recognition Dinner (held at Ironmaster's
Mansion, near The Museum). What a treat it was to
see the hard-working volunteers who participate in
The Museum's daily operation throughout the past
2014 museum season ! These are our docents, our
    volunteer construction workers, our maintenance
workers, and all who do all the necessary tasks.
Our new Manager, Joe Harold, has made important
changes that have doubled returns to the Museum.
These changes include the ability to accept credit cards,
sign-up volunteers electronically, and beginning the
Volunteer Newsletter ! He was the Master of Ceremonies
for the after-dinner Award Presentations to our volunteers.
~ more about this dinner will be in the next email I send ~

Our "Building Fund Campaign" has passed the $120,000
level, but still has a way to go before we have all the needed
funds for completion of the "Old Mill" renovations.
The lowest level now has a concrete floor and appears ready
to receive exhibits ! The outside ramp work to the upper floors
continues to progress and has begun to take solid shape !
Much construction work there remains to be done.

The volunteer work efforts, the volunteer artifact donations,
and the volunteer financial contributions have brought our
    A. T. Museum to the completion of its fifth year of operation.
It continues to expand into the entire "Old Mill" building as
the renovations allow. Your support is seen in all this success.
Thank you, Museum Friends. Your support is appreciated.

In the attachments, please review the President's
    2014 A. T. Museum Progress Report (1st. attachment)
and the printable member / donor form (2nd. attachment).

BEST WISHES & HAPPY TRAILS !

I've been meaning to ask...who own the building?
The trouble I have with campfires are the folks that carry a bottle in one hand and a Bible in the other.
You never know which one is talking.

The building is the "Old Mill" of the Pine Grove Furnace Ironworks, which for some years has been

Cool VOLUNTEER NEWSLETTER ~ AT NOVEL "THRU-", A RECENT REVIEW ~ 2014 Campaign

VOLUNTEER NEWSLETTER ~ AT NOVEL "THRU-", A RECENT REVIEW ~ 2014 CAMPAIGN

    Dear Appalachian Trail Museum Friends,

The Museum closed for the winter November 2, but Museum-related activities

and news still occur! I even managed to get back up to Pennsylvania from my
Savannah, Georgia home for the Museum's Volunteer Recognition Dinner back
in the middle of November ~ and glad that I did. It was a crowd of over 50
serious Museum supporters all in one place at one time, which made for a
most enjoyable evening. More about it and even some photos will be found in
the Volunteer Newsletter link: VOLUNTEER NEWSLETTER, Vol. 2, Issue 1
Additionally, this issue of the Newsletter is packed full of recent news about
the renovations of the basement (more excellent photos); a year-end message
    from Joe Harold, Appalachian Trail Museum Manager; a Fall Furnace Fest report;
    an article & photos about the two ladies "Drag'n Fly" & "Freckles" and their thru-hike;
    a report about the recent $18 K grant from the Cumberland Valley Visitors Bureau;
highlights and milestones of the 2014 Museum season; and the news that we
open for the 2015 season on Saturday, March 28, 2015 !

Richard Judy, author of the A. T. Museum published novel "Thru- An Appalachian Trail Love Story",
recently gave an interview to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. In this excellent interview, it
is noted that "until Judy came along, almost no one had successfully set a fictional story against
the backdrop of the trail" ! Read for yourself by clicking on:
"THRU-". RECENT REVIEW IN ATLANTA JOURNAL-CONSTITUTION
It should be noted that ALL PROCEEDS from sales of this book go to The Museum,
per Judy's generous ongoing grant !

Our "Building Fund Campaign" has passed the $120,000
level, but still has a way to go before we have all the needed
funds to expand into the entire "Old Mill" building as
the renovations allow. Your financial support is required, not only for
this renovation work, but also for the daily 2015 A. T. Museum operations.
    Your support is appreciated.

    Dear Appalachian Trail Museum Friends,

BEST WISHES for the HOLIDAYS !

The Museum is closed for the winter. The sensitive items from the exhibits
have been removed; the water turned off. The Museum reopens March 28, 2015
    for its sixth season !

On December 10, the artifacts stored on the second floor were moved to our new

storage facility. MANY THANKS go to Ed, Carol, Jack, Jim, Margy, Michele and Ron
(Museum Manager Joe's moving crew). That move is the feature of the Dec. issue
of the Volunteer Newsletter ! Additionally, the issue has a photo of the Museum from
an "uncommon angle", which shows the other side of the building with the ramps
to upper floors (still under construction). To review the Dec Volunteer Newsletter,

Cool A Gift for the Holidays !

Here's a little something for the holiday season that I think is appropriate
for all of us hikers, since we are "out-there" in the forests and woods much of
the time. In other words, we walk under the trees and stay in the wooden shelters.
We know the wide variety of wood craft styles we see in shelters; thy run a wide range
of construction types from the grand ones like the "Fontana Hilton" (a double -wide,
with a central floor between the two sides) and the "Taj-Mahal" type like the
one in the Mt. Roger's Recreation Area - the "Partnership Shelter", a grand, 2-story,
log cabin with a hot-water shower ! And then, we have slept on the "wash-board floor"
of the rude Hurd Shelter (the last one northbound before Abol Bridge. Many types in between
these. Therefore, I think the following short film clip might be of interest and also fit
this splendid, celebratory season of holidays. Click on the following, then click on the
"skip advertisement" to go direct to the film: BAVARIAN WOOD CRAFTSMAN AT WORK !

I remain amazed by his steady control for the length of time involved every time I watch it!

Thank you, A. T. Museum Friends for your support ~ It is appreciated.

    MERRY CHRISTMAS ! ~ HAPPY HANUKKAH !

    Thumbs up MARO - A.T.C. Newsletter article ~ 2 important dates ~ "Bodacious" & Frances WED !

    2 IMPORTANT DATES / RECENT ARTICLE / "BODACIOUS" & FRANCES WED !

    Dear Appalachian Trail Museum Friends,

It's hard to believe that half of January has already passed as we progress
    into 2015 ! Please mark as "IMPORTANT" these two dates on your calendar;
1.) Saturday, February 28 ~ DEADLINE for you to make your nomination
to the 2015 AT Hall of Fame ( to do so now, see the Nominations attachment).
    2.) Saturday, March 28 ~ A. T. Museum opens for the 2015 season !

I want to share with you the following article, since the A.T.C. office
in Boiling Springs is a close neighbor to our A. T. Museum:
    **********************************************
    Recent "local news" article from
    the A. T. C. ~ Mid-Atlantic Region Newsletter (Boiling Springs, PA office):
Holiday Project Adds A Little Warmth to the Winter Chill

In December, the A.T. Community™ of Boiling Springs and

Girl Scout Cadette Troop #11319 partnered to add a little warmth
to the wintry weather by organizing a craft session for the
annual tree lighting at Children's Lake. Families had the opportunity
to learn more about the Appalachian Trail and ATC while creating
nature-themed ornaments using twigs and pine cones.
Larger pine cones were also available to be made into backyard bird feeders
using a combination of peanut butter, suet and bird seed. Families also
took home a Backyard Birds Journal to help track the feathered friends
who came to visit the new feeders. It was a great opportunity
to engage families who were not familiar with the A.T. and provide
a great first experience, as well as helping to establish a foundation that brings them back to ATC
for more opportunities to get outdoors together!

    *******************************************
    Recent news:
    "On January 1, 2015, at 3 p.m.
    at The Compleat Naturalist
    in Asheville, North Carolina,
John Philip Baeudet and Frances Ruthe Figart
    were joined in matrimony."
~ a photo taken of them at the museum banquet by Dan Innamorato
is in the photo attachment below.

Yes, that's right, our AT Hall of Fame "walking-stick" man
and the lovely lady he had with him last June at the banquet
are married ! With their permission (and their help in a much
needed proofing job), I want to share their websites with you.
John"Bodacious" has supplied each of our Hall of Fame inductees
with a treasured walking stick. I hope you find their websites
(with lots of photos)and lifestyles pleasurable, informative, and'
positive. Click on either one of the two "Red Wolf post" attachments,
(WORD or PDF, whichever you may prefer).

Our "Building Fund Campaign" has passed the $132,000
level, but still has a way to go before we have all the needed
funds to expand into the entire "Old Mill" building as the renovations allow.
Your financial support is required, not only for this renovation work,
but also for the daily 2015 A. T. Museum operation. For a convenient,
printable contribution-membership form, see the "FORM" attachment.
To donate electronically, click on SUPPORT, then the "Donate" button.

    Your support is appreciated.
