By the way, my guess is that he is hiking from Springer to Neels Gap. I'm curious to find out.

I hope that it helps him to recharge a bit . . . that is one of the reasons that I hike, and I suspect the same is true for many of you. I do find it a bit sad and hypocritical that many folks are slamming him for this. I wonder how some of these same critics would have reacted if a high profile politician from the left were hiking.

Left or right who cares. If he was hiking he just got the A.T. a ton of free publicity.

Look forward to his trip report. Maybe he ran into some disgruntled hiker ------ what was his name......??????? No don't say i! Does he now qualify to attend trail days?

According to the news, he told his staffers and did call.
    He's allowed to hike. Jeepers.

I would like to know where he had hiked. Possibly later on it will leak out..... What better place to clear your mind than a hike on the AT. Also helps keep the pesky media off your back...tv cameras are not that light.

A little odd he left his 4 boys home on Fathers Day, and apparently didn't tell them or his wife where he was going, or even that he was going. Strange family values.

Personally, I think it would be great if all the politicians took occasional incognito walks on the AT.

I suspect thrus may miss a few special days over the course of their walks as well.

I agree.... Speaking for myself, I know that getting out there and hiking does alot to restore me as a person. I think if more of our leaders took the time get out there and hike we might see some better policy when they got back home....

Senator Bob Corker from Tennessee (R) used to backpack on the AT pretty regularly when he was Mayor of Chattanooga. Miss Janet shuttled him once or twice.

Several years ago I saw Zell Miller, former Georgia governor and senator on the AT between Unicoi Gap and Blue Mountain. He was with another guy, and they just looked like any other hiker out for the day. Of course, he's a real old mountain boy from Young Harris.

We don't know that he didn't tell his wife. I mean I heard he didn't tell anyone anything, then lo and behold, oops, he did tell his staffers...

And how many Fathers go play golf on Father's Day?

Love to know how many Mom and Dad hikers who are out there who are not home on Father's Day and Mother's Day....

Again, jeepers creepers. The media is always looking for the next soap opera.

    'nough said.

I think it's a pretty good story. I am curious to see when, and if, he can detail his trip. How could he plan a four-day hike w/o his wife knowing?

From waht I understand former Clinton Admin. Sec. of the Interior Bruce Babbit is an avid hiker. I once saw a pix of him in some AT book attempting the the 1/2 gallon challange.

Perhaps he didn't tell his family due to the fact that he may have thought they would try to badger him into not going.

The commentators are making much of the fact that it was Hike Naked Day, saying things like, "Who would possibly hike naked," or worse, "who would possibly hike alone?" Not even hikers hike alone!" And, "Five days - that's not a hike, it's a death march!"

Meanwhile, did any WB member happen to see him? Any confirmation at all?
