    Default Secret Shelter

Has the Secret Shelter been closed?

This was reported on another forum.

I met Jim Murray a few years ago, great guy. I'll never forget he offered me a donut. I think he was testing me to see if I was a thru or section hiker, a thru hiker would never turn down a donut! I passed, I was section hiking.

I think that report said that the shelter was closed but the grounds were still open with water and shower services available.

It is a privatly owned shelter. Stayed there with SOJO, Conan and a lady from FL last July. Neat place with interesting octagon shaped privy. Only sleeps about 4 people. I tented in back of it.

Is the Secret Shelter in VT located just south of the Gov. Clement Shelter? Is there a water supply nearby?

The Secret Shelter in NJ just before heading towards Unionville, is closed. The water is still on and you can tent there. However, the showers, dryer and small hostel are closed. The Italian donkeys are also gone. -- I got this info from a hiker that just hikeed the area. He recommended going into Unionville and staying at the Mayor's place if you are looking for a hostel.

Yes, that is it. It's just before Gov. Clement shelter and does have water. You exit the trail left at a gravel road crossing and walk about .3 mile as I recall. There is a small sign before you get there telling you where to turn. You'll want to watch closely as the sign is easy to overlook.

That's a shame that it closed. I stayed there on a 2003 section hike. Had the whole place to myself. The shelter looked run down on the outside but had all the conveniences of home on the inside.

the shelter in NJ is awesome--i hope it's not closed. The donkeys were a nice/hilarious touch. Actually, Unionville in general is pretty awesome. I was there in summer 06, and the bagel shop was fantastic, I slept in the town gazebo, and had a beer and watched a yankees game with one of the mayor's friends.
