People seem surprised when I tell them I'm going solo. But I've pretty much run into the same thing you have. Coordinating with trail friends and relatives just ends up being frustrating. The good news you'll meet plenty of people on the trail. Someone will end up being your friend even if you only see each other when your get to camp.

thanks for the encouragement. I'm doing it with or without him. We have planned for over half a year and he still seems to just be bull****ting around. I'm ready to go. And i'm sure i'll make some friends I always do when I go hiking - usually always friendly people

An update to my start date, I am heading to Ga. tomorrow and starting the trail (approach) on Sunday the 28th of March. Packing now...and experiencing a whole gamut of emotions as I do so. Trail name is still unknown.

This website has been a real helpful tool and a great source of entertainment as well. Best wishes to all and see you on the trail somewhere.

    name: sarah
trail name: can't wait to get one, hopefully one waaaayyy more original than 'sarah'!
    direction: nobo
    start: mid may
approach trail: I would, but i have to get to katahdin by aug 28...
as is i may have to 'yellow blaze' around NY to make it in time. i'm from maine, so i'm really 'going home'. so i 'have' to make it to katahdin, but i won't mind skipping some in the middle in order to enjoy the time on the trail i have.

in other words, i am not a purist but i'll enjoy my time on the trail!

Smile The Journey is the Destination!!

My last two Shakedown Hikes have convinced me that in spite of all my hardwork and training, I'm not ready to hike 12 to 20 miles a day. Nor do I want to. At the moment I'm good for 5 to 6 hours of hiking in a day. at 1.5 miles per hour that would be maybe 7.5 to 9 miles a day max. I want to have time to smell the flower's and enjoy the views. I'm moving my start date to the beginning of May, hoping for better weather, and planning for 6 to 9 miles a day.
I'll still follow the Cool Breeze Itinerary starting in Daleville VA, and ending at Kent CT. Whether or not I complete a thru this year, will depend on when I get to Kent, and how I feel when I get there.

SOME SAGE WORDS ABOUT MY REVISED PLAN FROM ONE OF MY VERY GOOD FRIENDS
Well, if the "Journey is the Destination" as you say, then couple of thoughts.
    1) The goal is to hike the trail, not die on the trail
    2) If it takes you two years to hike it, you have still hiked it but lived to tell about it.
    3) The grandkids will not care that it took you two years!
    4) The advantage of hiking for only 5 (or less) hours is that you have more time to enjoy the wilderness and the camp you set up and since you may only pass that way once, make the most of the time to enjoy what you see..
    5) There is no reward for the fastest or the slowest, only the reward of the journey and the friends you make along the way.

    Default Thru-hiking in 2010!!

    Trail Names: Fyrfly & Moses
    Heading North: GA to ME
    Starting Date: Around April 20th
    Doing Approach Trail

Coming from Orlando, Fl and starting a little late. Have to attend my grandfathers' funeral. Started hiking the AT in 1998 in sections and finally finished with my Katahdin summit hike 10 yrs later in 2008. Now I get to follow my dream and do a thru hike in 2010. I'm excited! Moses has never hiked the trail and it will be a new experience for him.
