Looking for a water quality update here. I'm starting to do some NY sections and noticed that the guthook comments in the past talk about contaminated water. Anyone have any insights?

I hike past the Wiley shelter on a regular basis. The well pump (now disabled along with others) was posted several years ago with a sign that the water 'could be contaminated and should be treated'. It seemed to me it was the precursor to the clubs deciding to disable the wells - a well pump is considered a drinking water source, but if it isn't being tested regularly then it can't be used as such.
The spring that supplied that well is flowing very well right now and is easy to collect (it will get lower as summer progresses). It flows directly across the trail north of the shelter, below the disabled pump. Filter or treat it like you would any other source. IMO it is perfectly fine as a water source and I know that hikers have and continue to use it.
