    Thumbs up 2009 hiker sightings

Just got back from the SoRuck at the NOC (it...was...cold...), amidst all the hikers enjoying the Ruck, there were actually some hikers there:

Achilles (SOBO-don't know if he is the last or not)
    Kayak Karl
    John
    Rocky
    Swamp Fox

I'm sure they enjoyed the brief respite from the bitter cold (not too mention all the good food).

GOOD LUCK to them and to all who follow. I reckon Springer will start being crowded soon...stay warm and stay dry...

    See you on the trail,

Very short day hike to Laurel Fork Falls today (it wasn't frozen). Stopped by Kincora on the way home to say hello to Bob. Didn't expect to see any NOBOs yet, but there was one enduring the cold temps:

    Trek

    Once again, to all.

I passed Achilles yesterday. He was going to summit today with his dad
    I think he said 7 1/2 months

Saw someone at Stover Creek today carrying 65 pounds that was heading to Maine.
    Carrying 30 days of food.
And camoflauge netting stuff so he could hide his pack if need be.
And didn't know that you could get maps and guidebooks.

I was in the same boat a few years back. I'm not sure how much my pack weighed. Alot. I didn't know there were books and maps. I didn't have to resupply till hot springs.

Right now since traffic is light, there will be fewer hikers for the heavyweight pack guy to see that you don't need so much stuff! Mtn. Crossings isn't too far

I just dropped Coral off at Indian Grave Gap. The snow was falling and looked nice up there.

Maybe I will see some thrus this weekend up on Tray. I usually don't expect to see many in Georgia this time of year though, but I guess there are always a few out there somewhere. Sure is gonna be a cold windy one tonight here. But Saturday is looking like the high 60s during the day.

Just cruised up to Cross Mountain Rd. Got there just as Kayak Karl was heading through the stile into the Osborne Farm. It was about 40F and raining.

Chatted for a few in the relative comfort of my truck. The rain has been on and off, but is coming down pretty good now.

    Good Luck, Kayak Karl.

I missed Kayak Karl by two days in Damascus, but he's gotten off trail for a while to get his weight back up from what I hear.

I dropped off "Qtip" (from NY) late yesterday and counted no less than 12 NOBO's! I couldn't believe there were that many. One of them told me the last 2 days filled 2 pages at ASP. Possibly and exageration? Possibly due to the bad weather over the weekend they may have delayed till mon/tues? I hiked up to Springer & its shelter and there were 3 at the shelter, 2-3 tenting and the rest moved on to Stover Creek. Man I wish I had brought my gear! I wish I had brought Many Sleeps some warm food too (he said it was 9 degrees mon night!). Man it was exciting seeing everyone start! Unfortunately, on the way home I was delayed 45 minutes while a helicopter flew in to extract a injured person from an auto accident on Roy Road. I hope everyone was OK.

While waiting for the rest of the maintainers to arrive at Dennis Cove Rd trailhead for our Tuesday maint trip (DOH!! - yeah, I know it is Fri - bad weather postponed until today), another SOBO popped out of the woods this morning:

    Graham

I think there is someone else just ahead of Graham, but I don't know...NOBOs will probably start to trickle through soon...

I uploaded some pictures of our rock work. Another group of maintainers did a small trail redirect to avoid some roots and tricky footing. Great job, guys!

Good Luck, Graham. Only a few weeks to go...enjoy this weekend of nice weather.

I'm getting ready to hike from Dennis Cove to Standing Bear farm. Can I assume that all of the snow, ice, slush, etc is completely gone?

Passed Dagobah yesterday (3/10/09) and his dog on Big Bald. They should make it to Erwin today.

No. Roan Mountain might still have quite a bit. Plus, it looks like rain on Thu/Fri with dropping temps. So, even if it has all melted (which I doubt on Roan - a couple of weeks ago there were alot of 30'-50' ice sheets to go around) it will probably freeze again. Won't know until you get out there...
