I walked over the Roan balds from Carver's Gap to US-19E a few weeks ago. It was 15F at 10:15 am when I started, with 40 mph sustained winds and what I estimated to be 70 mph gusts that hit me sideways and kept me from walking in a straight line! Fortunately, the sun was shining which made for an exhilarating walk in 4-6" of snow (the deeper snow was in the woods, as much of it had blown off the balds). The first picture is of the trail winding up Jane Bald, while the second shows unmarked trail between the icy bushes between the balds.

Probably gonna be even whiter tomorrow...because of impending bad weather our normal Tue maint has been rescheduled for Wed. The ridgeline of Iron Mountain off of TN91 has white tops now...

    See you on the trail,

Awesome pics. I hope for those conditions on our hike Thanksgiving weekend.
The trail was here before we arrived, and it will still be here when we are gone...enjoy it now, and preserve it for others that come after us

I drove up 421 from Bristol, and it was already looking impending. I went heck no since I was coming down with a sinus infection.

Couple days ago, it was like 60s with some little rain, now its the 20s snowing.

Amazing pictures! Your thread caught my eye because my brother and I happened to be at Carvers Gap on that very same day. It was wicked cold!

The only time I got cold was when I was coming back onto the bald. The wind had picked up a lot and it went right through my layers! Thank GOD I was only up there for 'bout 10 minutes! lol It Was a beautiful day GOD blessed me with such great views and photo shots!!
